HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team picked up its first victory of the season as the Colonels split their final two games of the Lion Classic on Sunday, defeating Akron, 5-1, before dropping the finale against Jackson State, 10-2, in five innings.
In game one, sophomore
Katie Moulder (1-0) held the Akron offense in check, striking out a career-high seven batters en route to her fifth career complete game. In her first start of the season, Moulder gave up seven hits and walked only one batter.
The Colonels (1-4) used the long ball to plate four of their five runs, including sophomore
Lauren Jolivette's first career home run, a three-run shot in the second that gave Nicholls a 4-0 lead. After the Zips scored a run in the fourth, senior
Ashley Ray, who put Nicholls on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly, led off the fifth with her third homer of the weekend.
Moulder would strand three runners in the final two innings to secure head coach
Angel Santiago's first career victory.
Nicholls had nine hits in the game, led by two each from Ray,
Ashley Bertot and
Kat Angeles.
In the finale, the Colonels scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cut their deficit to 5-2, but Jackson State plated five runs in the bottom half to earn a 10-2 run-rule victory.
Freshman
Rachael Hugghins (0-2) picked up the loss, giving up four earned in two inning of work.
The Colonels return to action on Wednesday as they host Southern Miss for their 2012 home opener. First pitch at the Colonel Softball Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m.
