THIBODAUX  – The Nicholls State University women's tennis team played its first home match of the spring season on Saturday and was defeated, 6-1, by ULM at the Colonel Tennis Complex.

Marie Aubert and Andrea Pont Grau teamed up for an 8-6 victory against Vivian Polak/ Ema Turudija at the No. 3 slot, but the Warhawks (4-0) earned the doubles point by taking the top two matches. Parija Maloo/ Janna Leeuwerik fell 8-6 at the No. 1 spot and Catherine Gauthier/ Marina Ljoshveska lost 8-5 at No. 2.

In singles competition, ULM proved to be too strong as they won five of the six matchups. Maloo was able to remain perfect in singles in the early season, winning at the No. 1 slot, 6-4, 7-6 against Sophie Rufyikiri. Aubert was the only other Colonel to win a set in singles action as the freshman won the opening set 6-2 against Silva Tumova before dropping the next two, 6-1.

The Colonels took the courts on Sunday at Jackson State, with the results still pending. Nicholls returns to action as the women and men's teams host William Carey on Tuesday (Feb. 14). First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
