Hattiesburg, Miss. –
After pulling off a major upset on Friday against No. 29 Southern Miss, the Colonels had to wait a day to get back on the field to try and take the series, but the cold weather provided cold Nicholls bats as the Colonels dropped both games of a doubleheader Sunday, 5-1 and 5-2.

Holding a two run lead after41/2 innings of play, the Golden Eagles (2-1) took advantage of two throwing errors by the Colonels (1-2) in the home half of the inning that led to a sac fly that tied the game at 2-2. The Colonels were able to get out of the inning using Brad Delatte and Jordan McCoy to halt the USM offensive output.

Unfortunately for the Colonels, McCoy was battered by Southern Miss in the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits in the inning to give USM the 5-2 lead the Golden Eagles would maintain for the last inning to hold on for the win.

Mike Wisecarver got the start for Nicholls in the game and in 4.1 innings of work gave up six hits on the afternoon with four strikeouts, as Southern Miss scored two unearned runs during his time on the mound. McCoy garnered the loss while USM's Cameron Giannini got the win holding the Colonels hitless over the final three innings of the game.

Michael LeGrange had two of the Colonels' four hits on the night with an RBI and run scored in the process. Blake Bergeron and Austin Flores each had one hit during the game.

The Colonels scored their first run of the game in the second inning, as LeGrange scored on a wild pitch after getting on with a single with two outs in the inning.

The second run of the game for the Colonels gave Nicholls its only lead in the fourth inning, as a LeGrange single brought in Bergeron who singled and stole second to lead off the inning.

The Colonels committed five errors in the game, while the Golden Eagles pounded out 10 hits, with three of those hits coming from Dillon Day.

The Colonels will be back in action on Tuesday hosting the Southern Jaguars at Didier Field. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. in Thibodaux.

Game One: Southern Miss, 5, Nicholls 1 in 9 Innings

The Golden Eagles limited the Colonels to just one run on three hits, while Southern Miss scored two runs in the first and three runs over the seventh and eighth innings to defeat Nicholls 5-1 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Pat Shreve earned the loss for the Colonels (1-1) surrendering two runs on four hits in his five innings of work, but did have five strikeouts on the day.

The Colonels scored in the top of the first for the second straight game to begin the doubleheader, as a Jeremy Hill sacrifice fly brought in Matt Richard who reached base on a walk and advanced two bases after a steal and wild pitch.

The Golden Eagles took that run back and grabbed another in the very next inning, scoring both runs off of three hits in the inning before leaving two left on base.

Although there wouldn't be a lot of scoring over the next few innings, each team had chances to capitalize on runners in scoring position, as the Colonels left two on base in the fifth, while the Colonels got solid play by Ray Eureste nearly turning a double play, and a diving catch by Matt Richard in center field to end the sixth inning.

When Shreve exited after five complete innings, the Colonels used both Michael Suk and Kory Delange to close out the game, but the two pitchers gave up the last three Golden Eagle runs on five hits over the final three innings, while Southern Miss' James McMahon kept Nicholls hitless over the same amount of time to earn the save.

Hill, Beau Faulk and Eureste had the lone hits on the afternoon for the Colonels, while USM's Kameron Brunty was 3-of-4 at the plate with an RBI.
