THIBODAUX, La. – Looking to open the 2012 home schedule the right way, the Nicholls baseball team hosted the Southern Jaguars at Ray E. Didier field Tuesday night and defeated the Baton Rouge-based club 10-3.
Kory Delange pitched five innings of two hit ball for the Colonels (2-2) giving up two runs, two earned, with seven strikeouts for the first win of his career in a Nicholls uniform. On the night, Nicholls struck out 14 Jaguar (2-2) batters between Delange,
Merrick Ardoin,
Donnie White and
Brad Delatte, as Southern finished with only four hits on the night.
Pedro Fargas took the loss for Southern, pitching 3.2 innings giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Nicholls got a big day from
Michael LeGrange and
Philip Lyons, who combined to go 4-for-9 at the plate with six RBI's and a run scored between the two. Five Colonels tallied two hits in the game, including
Jeremy Hill who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run scored,
Matt Richard's 2-for-5 night and
Austin Flores' 2-for-5 night.
The Nicholls hit parade began in the bottom of the first as the Colonels got two hits in the inning from
Ray Eureste and Hill, as the Colonels scored on a throwing error from Jaguar shortstop Jeremy Lopez that brought in Eureste.
In the fourth inning the Colonels exploded for four runs on four hits beginning with a Beau Falk single to start the inning. A Flores double put the Colonels in prime position to strike with runners in scoring position, and that's when Lyons stepped up to the plate and singled to bring in Flores and Faulk. Lyons would then steal second and third, eventually brought in by Hill who singled to put the Colonels up 5-0.
Southern would score all three of their runs in the sixth, using three hits and a Nicholls error to pull to within two of the Colonels in the sixth inning, but Nicholls rallied to score three of their own in the inning where a bases loaded opportunity was the perfect time for LeGrange to strike using a bases clearing double to make the score 8-3 Nicholls with only two innings left.
The final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the eighth where
Blake Bergeron, who got on with a walk, advanced after a Flores single brought the senior in. Southern then loaded the bases and walked in one run for the final run for the Colonels before shutting the door in the very next inning.
The Colonels return to the diamond this weekend hosting the Colonel Round Robin with Alabama State and Stony Brook beginning Friday afternoon.
