THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University softball team will partake in its third tournament in as many weekends, playing four games in The Gold Pub and Grill Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss. starting on Saturday.

The Colonels will open up the tournament against Louisiana Tech at 4:30 p.m. before playing Southern Miss at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Nicholls takes on Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) at 10:30 and wraps up the weekend with a game against Mississippi Valley State at 3:30 p.m.

Nicholls (2-8) will be looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season after the Colonels knocked off Alcorn State, 6-1, on Wednesday.

As a team, the Colonels are hitting .251 with three players batting over .300. Senior Ashley Ray heads the team at .379, junior Ashley Bertot boosted her average to .371 after extending her hitting streak to seven games with three hits against Alcorn and sophomore Kat Angeles rounds out the leaders at .346.

In the circle, sophomore Katie Moulder and junior Ashton Bennett have recorded the wins for the Colonels, sporting identical 1-3 records. Bennett had a rough start to the season, giving up at least four runs in four of her first six appearances, but found her groove against Alcorn, tossing five-plus innings of relief without giving up a hit.
