Kicking off a two-game midweek set on Tuesday, the Nicholls baseball team got a much needed lift in confidence after defeating the LSU-Alexandria Generals 7-3 at Ray E. Didier Field.

Even after the game was delayed by over an hour due to lighting issues, the Colonels (3-5) scattered 10 hits over the length of the game, scoring in the third, fifth and sixth inning, while the Generals (3-9) scored all three of their runs in the seventh.

Kory Delange threw another gem for nearly seven innings, lasting 6.2 innings in his second straight win as a starter, giving up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Delange threw 105 pitches on the night, 65 for strikes. Kelby Langston took the mound for the first time as a Colonel, pitching 1.1 innings giving up two hits, while Brad Delatte shut the door in the final inning, striking out two batters to preserve the win.

Colton Knuckols got the loss for the Generals, giving up three runs on four hits, two earned, in just four innings of work.

Leo Vargas, Mike Barba and Matt Richard each finished with two hits, as Richard scored twice and brought in a run. Barba scored once and drove in a run, while Vargas got his first two hits of his Nicholls career, scoring twice in the game. Both Evan Weibel and Philip Lyons drove in two runs on the night with a hit for both.

The Colonels finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, using small ball to get the job done, beginning with a leadoff bunt single by Leo Vargas to get on first and then stole second. Evan Weibel put down the sacrifice bunt to put Vargas on third. A passed ball by the Generals catcher allowed Vargas to cross the plate. After a Mike Barba bunt single of his own and advance on a balk, Barba stole third and on the very next at bat by Richard tripled to drive in Barba. Phil Lyons then stepped up to the plate and laced a single into left field bringing in Richard giving Nicholls a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the fifth the Colonel bats came alive again beginning with Richard's second triple of the game, Lyons then flied out to center brining in Richard to earn the sacrifice fly. Hill singled as well in the inning, but the Colonels didn't plate any more runs in the inning, taking the lead 4-0.

LeGrange kicked off the bottom of the sixth with a double to right field, and after Faulk got on with a walk, Vargas laid down his second bunt single of the game to load the bases. Weibel then drilled a single to left field to drive in LeGrange and Faulk and advance Vargas to third to put runners at the corner. Barba then singled up the middle to bring in Vargas to put the Colonels up 7-0.

The Generals plated three runs in the top of the seventh on five hits, as the Colonels transitioned between Delange and Langston.

The Colonels will return to action tomorrow, traveling to face the Alcorn State Braves with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
