Pat Shreve won his second game of the year in a 4-2 win over Southeastern Saturday
Final Stats HAMMOND, La. – After combining for 19 runs and 26 hits the night before, the Nicholls and Southeastern baseball teams settled down a bit in game two Saturday in Hammond. Fortunately for the Colonels, two runs in the very first inning along with two more in the sixth would be enough to pull out the 4-2 victory and take their opening conference series of the year.
Nicholls (9-6) have won five-straight and ties the second most consecutive victories for any Nicholls team since 2003. Southeastern (10-5) dropped its second straight and fell for the first time at home all year.
Pat Shreve (2-2) went seven full innings, scattering seven hits on the afternoon with six strikeouts to only allow one to cross the plate.
Jordan McCoy earned his fifth save of the year, and fourth straight save overall, tossing 1.1 innings of work giving up two hits with a strikeout.
Seven of the Colonels' nine starters garnered hits in the game, as
Jeremy Hill drove in two RBI's on the day with
Austin Flores and
Evan Weibel each driving in one.
Philip Lyons extended his career-best and season long hitting streak to ten games, while he
Mike Barba,
Blake Bergeron and
Michael LeGrange all crossed the plate for the Colonels.
The Colonels led off the game with a walk to Barba to get the game going, Lyons then extended his hitting streak by doubling down the right field line to put runners in scoring position with no outs. Hill took the first pitch he saw and looped a single into left center, driving in both runners to give Nicholls a 2-0 lead. Nicholls ended the inning with two strikeouts and Hill getting picked off to end the inning.
A solo home run by SLU's Cody Gougler ended a scoreless drought for both teams in the bottom of the fourth, as the Lions would strand two runners on base to close out the inning to end the SLU at bat.
Weibel led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield in the fifth, and after a pop up bunt by
Matt Richard, Barba singled to center field to put two runners on with one out. Lyons hit into an unassisted ground out to advance the two to second and third, but the Colonels left the two stranded to keep the score 2-1.
Bergeron led off the sixth with an infield single, and then stole second. A walk to LeGrange gave the Colonels two runners on base for the second time all game. Faulk put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners with only one out. Going to a full count, Flores hit a single through the left side to drive in Bergeron giving Nicholls a 3-1 lead. Nicholls almost caught the Lions napping after Lions coach Jay Artigues was ejected, as Weibel laid down a sacrifice bunt and was almost safe but serving its purpose bringing in LeGrange, giving Nicholls a 4-1 lead.
With one out, the Lions got consecutive runners on in the home half of the inning, but the Colonels turned their third double play of the weekend to get out of the jam.
Shreve exited in the eighth as
Brad Delatte came on in relief of the starter, and got in a little trouble giving up a run on two hits in the inning, but McCoy came in with two outs and got the swinging strikeout to end the inning.
Although McCoy would give up two singles in the last inning, McCoy got out of the inning unscathed and closed the door on the Lions to pick up the save.
The Colonels close out the series with game three tomorrow afternoon back in Thibodaux, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
