Colonels Drop Finale to Southeastern, 5-3

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – With a two run lead, and needing only six outs to finish off the sweep of Southeastern, the Nicholls baseball team could not hold on and gave up a four-run, two hit, two error eighth for the Lions to overcome Nicholls and win 5-3 in Thibodaux.

The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Nicholls (9-7, 2-1 SLC), which was tied for the second longest for the team in the last nine years. Southeastern (11-5, 1-2) had nine hits in the game and capitalized on four Nicholls errors to avoid the series sweep.

Mike Wisecarver (0-2) gave up four runs, two earned, on eight hits in seven innings of work in the loss, while Josh Janway improved to 4-1 on the year with Stefan Lopez earning his fifth save for Southeastern.

Mike Barba took advantage of his opportunities at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI's, followed by Beau Faulk who finished 2-for-4. Philip Lyons extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the game, as he was one of four Colonels to finish the game with at least a hit.

After an error and base hit had runners on base with just one out, a wild pitch by Wisecarver put Southeastern in prime position to get some early runs in the first inning. But a fly ball that wasn't deep enough was caught by Barba and threw out the SLU runner at home plate to keep zeros on the board and end the inning.

Nicholls got two runners on base in the home half of the inning, as Barba and Lyons got on with walks getting advanced to second and third on a groundout by Jeremy Hill. But the Colonels couldn't plate the runners as a popup by Blake Bergeron to the second baseman would catch both runners frozen, throwing to second baseman for the force out.

The Colonels didn't get their first hit in the game until the third inning, and it was a big one as Evan Weibel was on third after a walk, sacrifice bunt and ground out had the catcher 90 feet from scoring. With two outs Lyons stepped up to the plate and drove in Weibel to give Nicholls a 1-0 lead and extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

In the fourth a walk and another Nicholls error had Lion runners on base, but a grounder in the very next at bat helped the Colonels turn a double play to get out of the inning. Faulk got the second hit for the Colonels in the game in the fourth inning, but he would be the only Colonel to get on base as the game remained close.

The Lions tied the game in the fifth at 1-1 after a couple of singles and stolen bases gave SLU the chance to plate the equalizing run with only one out in the frame.

With two outs in the home half of the sixth, Nicholls got back-to-back singles from Bergeron and Michael LeGrange to put runners at the corners. With Faulk at the plate, Southeastern picked off Bergeron at third for the final out of the inning.

Again down with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, it looked as if the Lions would get out of the inning facing just three batters. But a Weibel chopper that should have ended the inning by the SLU shortstop was overthrown and Weibel got on easily. That was the beginning of the Nicholls rally as David Zorn got his first hit of his career to put runners at first and second. Matt Richard came in to pinch run for Weibel at second, and the Lions switched to Dylan Hills on the mound to try and get the final out. With the count at 2-2, Barba drilled a shot that just got over the head of the SLU left fielder that would garner a triple for the centerfielder driving in both runners and giving Nicholls a 3-1 lead.

The Colonels would not hold the lead for long as the Lions scored four in the eighth to take the lead for the first time in the game at 5-3. The Colonels would not be able to rally in the final two innings, as SLU only gave up two hits over the final 2.1 innings of the game.

The Colonels will hit the diamond on Tuesday, traveling to face the UNO Privateers at Maestri Field.
