Phil Lyons was 3-for-4 with a run scored against the Warhawks Friday night
Final Stats MONROE, La. – Two errors by the Nicholls State University baseball team in the first inning led to two early runs for the ULM Warhawks Friday night at Warhawk field in Monroe, and it would only be the beginning as ULM starting pitcher Randy Ziegler kept Nicholls batters at bay in ULM's 6-1 win over Nicholls in Monroe.
Nicholls (4-6) starting pitcher
Seth Webster (1-2) allowed six runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings, but finished tying the team season high of seven strikeouts during his outing. After winning his first game of the year, the senior has dropped his second straight decision.
The Colonels were held to just four hits on the night, and sophomore second baseman Phil Lyons had three of them, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored, while
Jeremy Hill had the only other Nicholls hit in the game. Lyons runs his hit streak to five games, tying
Blake Bergeron for most this season.
Ziegler struck out a career-tying ten batters for the Warhawks (7-3), giving up his only run of the game in the final inning.
The Warhawks plated both of their runs in the first inning beginning with a leadoff single by Les Aulds. Aulds stole second, and then advanced to third on a muffed throw by
Leo Vargas. A walk to Caleb Clowers put runners at the corners, then both in scoring position after an unassisted groundout. A wild pitch by Webster scored Aulds, and was followed by the second error for the Colonels in the inning, this time credited to Lyons, to bring in Clowers.
Both squads would be retired in order in four of the next five innings, as Lyons was the only Colonel to garner hits for the Colonels up to that point in the game.
ULM scored two more runs in the sixth inning after a single, double and single scored one run, before a no-out double play brought in one more score to put the Warhawks up 4-0. The home team then followed that up with another two-run inning in the seventh, using three hits to lead 6-0.
For the second time in the game, Lyons led off an inning with a single, this time coming in the ninth as he would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by
Michael LeGrange to bring in the only run for the Colonels in the game.
First pitch for game two of the series is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Warhawk Field in Monroe.
