LAFAYETTE, La.  –
The Nicholls State University softball team left nine runners on the base paths as the Colonels fell, 2-1, in a low scoring affair against Stephen F. Austin in their opening game on Friday in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational.

Nicholls (4-12) will continue play in the invitational on Saturday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8:30 a.m.) and No. 12 Louisiana-Lafayette (4 p.m.).

Kat Angeles accounted for three of the Colonels' six hits on the day and drove in the lone run on a double in the third inning. Ashley Bertot, Megan Gaspard and Rachael Hugghins accounted for the other three hits for the Colonels.

After the Ladyjacks scored in the top of the first on an RBI double, the bottom half of the frame looked promising for Nicholls, loading the bases with only one out. However, a baserunning mishap led to the second out and following a walk by Paige Miller, the Ladyjacks forced a groundout to leave the bases loaded.

In the third, SFA made it 2-0 after a deep fly went off the glove of leftfielder Lauren Batiz Divut and over the fence for a solo shot. In the Colonels' at-bat, Nicholls used doubles by Gaspard and Angeles to cut the lead in half.

The starting pitchers would take over for there, as neither gave up a run for the rest of the day. Katie Moulder (3-5) went the distance for the Colonels, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out six.

Angela White picked up the win for SFA, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts.
