Bergeron had three hits to lead the Colonels in their 6-4 win over UNO Tuesday
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – With winds coming from the south at nearly 30mph, and a 33-minute rain delay, the Nicholls baseball team was able to overcome the elements to get back into the win column on Tuesday, defeating the UNO Privateers 6-4 in Thibodaux.
A big day at the plate by the Colonels (12-9) aided in the win as Nicholls had ten hits in the game after being held to just one in their previous outing against Sam Houston State.
Blake Bergeron led Nicholls going 3-for-4 with three runs scored followed by
David Zorn and
Matt Richard who finished with two each.
Austin Flores had two RBI's in the game on just one hit at the plate.
Nicholls used five total pitchers in the game, with
Merrick Ardoin earning the first win of his career, giving up just two hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
Jordan McCoy came on in the ninth to close the door on UNO and earn his sixth save of the year. Jake Fabre (3-3) took the loss for UNO (9-10) giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits with three walks.
Bergeron earned the second hit for the Colonels in the inning, lacing a single to left center to get on base. The senior third baseman then advanced on a wild pitch to second base, and what looked to be a Flores groundout ended up being an errant throw by the shortstop and allowed Bergeron to score putting Nicholls up 1-0.
In the third, Richard got on with a walk and then proceeded to steal both second and third with only one out. After a walk to Lyons, Faulk flied out to center field after play resumed driving in Richard to give Nicholls a 2-0 lead after three.
Mike Suk came on after the delay for
Kory Delange, and UNO would drive in a run in the top of the fourth after three straight hits to pull within one of the Colonels.
Bergeron and Flores got back-to-back singles to left field to start off the bottom of the fourth inning. A pass ball strikeout allowed the two to advance to second and third.
David Zorn loaded the bases on a walk, leading to
Mike Barba singling through the left side to drive in Bergeron first. Richard then singled to the shortstop to drive in Flores putting the home team up two before a groundout double play ended Nicholls' inning with a 4-1 lead.
LeGrange singled up the middle for the Colonels in the fifth, and then stole second. Bergeron then drilled his third hit of the day into center field to put runners at the corners. A solid hit ball by Flores allowed the senior to reach on a fielder's choice to bring in LeGrange to put the Colonels up 5-1. After a double steal by Bergeron and Flores, Zorn got an infield single and allowed Bergeron to score, but it didn't go far enough past the fielder and caught Flores out at home to end the inning with Nicholls up 6-1.
Suk got into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases and then walking home one run with only one out.
Merrick Ardoin relieved Suk, but the first batter he faced singled to left driving in two runs to make the score 6-4 Nicholls. Ardoin would get out of the inning without giving up any more runs. Ardoin battled in the seventh, even with a runner on third was able to get out of the inning without damage.
UNO got another bases loaded opportunity in the eighth inning after the Colonels switched to White in relief of Ardoin, but White was able to settle down and leave the runners stranded to get out of the inning with the two-run lead still intact.
McCoy entered the game in the ninth and although he walked a batter and allowed a hit, got out of the inning by getting two batters to fly out and a grounder to end the game.
The Colonels head to Lake Charles this weekend to square off with the McNeese State Cowboys. The weekend series begins on Friday at Cowboy Diamond with first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
