Bergron blasted a shot over the left field fence for the only run the Colonels needed to win on Friday
Final Stats LAKE CHARLES, La. – Blake Bergeron took the first pitch he saw over the fence in the second inning, and
Seth Webster threw a career-high 128 pitches in his second complete game win of the year to propel the Colonels to a 1-0 victory Friday night over the McNeese State Cowboys in Lake Charles.
With the win the Colonels are now 8-3 on the road this year, and 4-1 in series openers.
Nicholls (13-9, 4-3) and McNeese (7-12, 4-3) each finished with seven hits in the game, as Webster (4-2) and Cowboys starting pitcher Trey Brown (1-3) combined for 248 pitches in the game. Webster has now won his last three starts, and has two complete game victories under his belt.
Seven Colonels earned hits for Nicholls on the night, as Bergeron was the only Colonel to score for tacking on two stolen bases.
After going down in order in the first inning Bergeron lit up the scoreboard in the second, drilling a fastball down the middle of the plate and sending it into the netting over the scoreboard for the ninth home run for his career giving Nicholls a 1-0 lead.
Michael LeGrange followed that up with a single up the middle and then stole second on a Flores swinging strikeout. A single by
Matt Richard to left field put LeGrange in motion and charging for home but the relay throw got to the catcher in time to make the tag at the plate for the out. Richard advanced to second on the throw, but would be left stranded to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Colonels got a great defensive play at the plate. With a McNeese runner on first with one out, a well played double by LeGrange off of the right field wall was able to keep a run from crossing the plate and the McNeese inning would come to a close with a popup in the very next at bat.
Bergeron got hit by a pitch to get on in the top of the fourth with one out. After a LeGrange fly out, Bergeron sole second and then advanced to third on the error by the McNeese catcher, but the Colonels couldn't capitalize on the momentum and ended the inning still up 1-0.
In the top of the sixth,
Mike Barba singled through the left side to get the inning going. In the very next at bat,
Philip Lyons put down sacrifice bunt to advance Barba to second, and continued toward third base and was thrown out to clear the bases.
Beau Faulk singled to left field and Bergeron was walked after, but the two would be left on base to end the inning.
Richard reached in the seventh after getting hit in the back. He would steal his 14th base of the year and was joined on the bases by
Evan Weibel who was walked on five pitches.
David Zorn struck out looking for the second out of the inning, and Barba grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.
Lyons was the first batter in the eighth, and hit his second triple of the year to lead off the inning. After Faulk grounded out for the first out, McNeese intentionally walked Bergeron for the potential double play. After Bergron stole second, the Cowboys then intentionally walked LeGrange to load the bases. Flores and Richard both got caught on check swing third strikes to end the inning.
After a strikeout to start the ninth, Zorn got hit trying to bunt and was awarded first base. A passed ball would allow Zorn to advance to second. With two outs, Lyons reached first on an error by the shortstop, putting runners at first and third, but Faulk hit a grounder to the shortstop to close the door on another Nicholls rally.
Webster only allowed one hit in the ninth, but with two outs already in hand was able to get the final batter with a strikeout to end the game.
First pitch for game two of the series is set for 3 p.m. tomorrow in Lake Charles.
