Colonels Snap Skid with 1-0 Win at SFA

Final Stats

NACOGDOCHES, Texas –
After six scoreless innings, the Nicholls State University softball team scored the game's only run on a bases loaded error in the seventh and junior Ashton Bennett went on to earn her first shutout of the season as the Colonels defeated Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at the SFA Softball Field.

With the win, Nicholls (5-19, 1-3) ends an eight-game losing streak and picks up its first conference victory of the season. SFA falls to 8-18 overall and 1-3 in the Southland.

Bennett (2-7) held the Ladyjacks in check, giving up just three singles in seven innings of work. She had 1-2-3 innings in second, fifth and seventh innings and finished with two strikeouts.

Bennett also sparked the Colonel seventh at the plate, lacing a one-out double to center. Following a walk and a hit-by-pitch that loaded the bases, Alaina Guidry, who had two of the Colonels' five hits, hit a grounder that was mishandled by SFA's pitcher, Angela White, allowing the runner to score at home.

The one run would be all Bennett needed as she forced three straight groundouts in the seventh to secure the win for the Colonels.

Ashley Bertot also had a base hit for Nicholls and Ashley Ray added a double to left field in the fourth, extending her on-base streak to 14 games and her hitting streak to eight.

The Colonels will start a five-game homestand on Tuesday, March 27 when they host Southeastern Louisiana for a conference doubleheader. First pitch at the Colonel Softball Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m.
