Webster struck out nine batters en route to his fourth-straight win Friday night in Thibodaux
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Behind another solid Friday start by
Seth Webster, the Colonel offense came alive and pounded out ten hits while the redshirt senior gave up only one run in Nicholls' 7-1 win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Friday night in Thibodaux.
Nicholls (15-11, 5-5 SLC) had a hold on the Islanders (11-15, 4-6 SLC) from the start, scoring all seven runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings, while AMCC's only run came in the fifth on a solo home run.
Webster (5-2) has now won his last four starts dating back to March 11th, with three consecutive complete games under his belt in the process. The right-hander had a 13-inning scoreless streak snapped on the solo shot, but retired the last ten Islanders batters in order to end the game, scattering five hits with a season nine strikeouts. Webster has not walked a batter in his last 27 innings of work.
Philip Lyons was almost unstoppable at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, followed by
Mike Barba who went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. In his first start in over two weeks,
Jeremy Hill singled and drove in two runs and scored once, while Lyons,
Beau Faulk and
David Zorn all extended their hitting streaks to five games.
Lyons earned the first hit for the Colonels in the game, singling through the left side to reach first. With Hill at the plate, the senior designated hitter grounded into the fielder's choice, but Lyons reached second safely as AMCC tried to get the force out.
Michael LeGrange got plunked in the arm to load the bases, but the last two batters flied out to end the inning.
Lyons led off the third inning with a single through the right side of the infield. In the very next at bat Hill drilled a double to right center field to drive in Lyons giving Nicholls a 1-0 lead. But the next three Nicholls batters struck out in order to end the inning.
After a two out single and an error by
Blake Bergeron at third put runners at second and third for the Islanders, a diving catch by Zorn in foul territory ended the AMCC threat.
With one out in the fourth,
Cody Dufrene and Zorn both walked to put runners at first and second. With an 0-2 count, Barba doubled to left field driving in Dufrene putting the Colonels up two. Lyons then reached on a sacrifice fly error by the left fielder to drive in Zorn making the score 3-1 Nicholls. Hill then grounded out to the second baseman to drive in Barba putting Nicholls up 4-0 before the inning ended.
Corpus Christi scored on a home run to left field by Jonathan Gonzales in the fifth to make the score 4-1 Colonels, but Nicholls would get out of the inning giving up just the one run.
Again with an out in the sixth inning, Zorn singled to left field to start the Colonel bats. Barba followed that up with clean bunt single to put runners at second and third. Lyons then singled to the second baseman, and with Zorn charging to home, the throw home went high and allowed the Colonel left fielder to score putting Nicholls up 5-1. With Barba at third and Lyons at second, Hill hit into the fielder's choice to catch Barba at the plate, putting runners at the corners. A balk allowed Lyons to score, with Faulk hitting a double down the left field line to drive in hill putting Nicholls up 7-1.
Game two will begin Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Thibodaux
