Colonels Net Series with 6-1 Win Over Islanders

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Looking to claim their second Southland Conference series of the year, the Nicholls baseball team again jumped on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders early and behind another solid outing by Pat Shreve, defeated the Islanders 6-1 Saturday afternoon in Thibodaux.

Nicholls (16-11, 6-5 SLC) senior pitcher Pat Shreve (3-4) went the distance, holding Corpus Christi (11-16, 4-6) to just one run on eight hits, with six strikeouts. It's Shreve's first complete game win of the year, and third of his career as he earned two at the end of the season last year.

Six Colonels garnered hits on the day, but none bigger than Blake Bergeron's two-run shot to put the Colonels up two early. Bergeron drove in three RBI's and scored once, but the heart of the Nicholls order came through for the home team, as Cody Dufrene tied a career-high in hits going 3-for-4 with two RBI's followed by Michael LeGrange's two hits and a score. Beau Faulk, Austin Flores and Jeremy Hill each garnered hits on the day, as Faulk extended his hitting streak to six games, and Flores' to five.

A single by LeGrange on the first pitch he saw led off the second inning, and just one pitch later Bergeron monster shot cleared the left field fence with ease and gave the senior infielder his tenth home run of his career putting Nicholls up 2-0.

In the fourth, Faulk singled to left field on one pitch, advancing to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out to advance to third, Flores doubled to right center field to score Faulk and take a 3-0 lead. Dufrene singled to score Flores from second putting the Colonels up four.

A double in the seventh proved to be a small spark for the Islanders, as two ground outs would give AMCC its first run of the game to make the score 4-1, but Shreve got out of the inning without giving up further damage.

After a few defensive changes for the Islanders in the eighth, Hill got the most out of his at bat and was walked. As Byron Cobb came on to pinch run for Hill, an error by the right fielder put two on with no outs. A single by LeGrange loaded the bases, with Bergeron hitting a sacrifice fly to left field bringing in Cobb. After a strikeout, Dufrene singled to left center driving in Faulk for the final run of the game to go up 6-1.

The Colonels look for the sweep in the finale on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Ray E. Didier field.
