LAFAYETTE, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team closed out the weekend at the Ragin' Cajun Invitational with its third straight mercy-rule defeat, falling 9-1 in five innings to the University of Kentucky on Sunday morning at Lamson Park.
Nicholls (4-15) was held to three hits in the loss and scored its only run in the first inning on a RBI single by
Rachel Moore.
Ashley Bertot, who scored the run after being walked, also had a hit and
Ashley Ray extended her on-base streak to nine games with a single in the fourth.
Trailing after the top of the first, Kentucky (10-8) grabbed the lead in its first at-bat with two runs on three hits. The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out before
Katie Moulder picked up a swinging strikeout; however, UK received back-to-back singles with two down to take a 2-1 lead.
After adding a run in the third, the Wildcats scored three in the fourth and then three in the fifth to claim a walk-off 9-1 victory. UK had four hits in the two frames and took advantage of a Colonel error in the fifth to end the game.
Moulder (3-6) was tagged with the loss, giving up one earned on six hits in three innings of work. She finished the day with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Colonels will return home to host the LSU Tigers on Wednesday. First pitch at the Colonel Softball Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m.
