Baseball Rough Up Jaguars, 8-4

Final Stats MOBILE, Ala. – A back-and-forth game for the first few innings between the Nicholls baseball team and the South Alabama Jaguars was ended after a three-run eighth inning by Nicholls gave the Colonels the lead for good, winning 8-4 in Mobile Wednesday night.

Nicholls (7-6) has won its last three, and five of its last six dating back to last week.

Michael Suk earned his third win of the year, tossing 2.1 innings of no-run, no-hit ball in relief of starter Kory Delange who went 3.2 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and four walks on 80 pitches. Between Suk, Merrick Ardoin, Brad Delatte and Donnie White, the Colonels only gave up two hits over the final five innings.

Six Colonels finished the game with hits, as Beau Faulk went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Mike Barba went 2-for-2 with an RBI, three runs scored and a triple. Philip Lyons and Jeremy Hill extended their hitting streaks, as Lyons hit safely in his eighth straight game on the year with an RBI and run scored, while Hill earned a hit for the sixth straight game with two RBI's. Matt Richard also drove in two runs on the night.

After the Jaguars (4-9) scored in the first and second innings, the Colonels took to the third and after Barba reached on a walk, Richard singled to put runners at first and second. Lyons followed that up with a single down the right field line to bring in Barba making the score 2-1 in favor of the Jaguars, but it wouldn't stay that way for long as Hill reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Richard to tie the game at 2-2.

After scores on a single and Nicholls throwing error, the Jaguars regained the lead 4-2 after the fourth inning, but Nicholls answered in the fifth with Barba's first triple of the season, and was then brought in on an RBI groundout by Richard to pull the Colonels to within one.

South Alabama would strand five runners total over the next two innings, leaving the door open for the Colonels to answer and in the seventh the Colonels worked their way into a bases loaded situation after a double by Faulk, Eureste hit by pitch and Barba walk. With the bases juiced Richard reached on a fielder's choice driving in Faulk, then pulled off a double steal as Richard took second allowing Eureste to steal home giving the Colonels a 5-4 lead.

Nicholls' offense exploded in the ninth as Eureste began the inning with a bunt single, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Weibel. Barba then took a 2-2 pitch to center field to drive in Eureste making the score 6-4 in favor of the Colonels. Lyons then advanced two bases after an error by the shortstop, scoring Barba putting Nicholls up three. The Colonels weren't done in the inning, after a pitching change, Hill tripled to left center to bring in Lyons giving Nicholls a four-run lead with three outs to go.

The Colonels open up Southland Conference play this weekend, with a three-game series against the Southeastern Lions. Games one and three will be played in Thibodaux, while game two will be played at Alumni Field in Hammond. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
