Talkington led the Colonels with six points followed by Thomas who had four, as they were the only two Nicholls players to finish with two field goals in the period.
Nicholls suffered a huge blow when the Southland's freshman of the year winner went down in the half with a knee injury and did not return.
UTA shot 42-percent in the first period, and got 15 points at the free throw line as the Colonels committed 13 personal fouls in the half.
Needing to rally even to make a game of it, the Mavericks never stepped off of the pedal, scoring eight points out of the gate in the second period and 22 points in the first ten minutes total. By the end of the game the Mavs led by as many as 48 points.
The Mavs scored 32 points in the paint, 24 points off of turnovers, 10 points on the fast break and 42 points off of the bench, while the Colonels finished with 14, 10, 4, 0 and 11 in those same categories.
