The Colonels fell to the Islanders 6-1 Sunday
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Wanting its first series sweep of the year, the Nicholls baseball team ran into a buzzsaw against the conference leader in strikeouts in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Daniel Minor, falling in the series finale 6-1 Sunday afternoon.
Mike Wisecarver (0-4) had a tough outing on Sunday, giving up six runs, four earned, on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Brad Delatte came on in relief for the final four innings, with an almost perfect outing striking out four with three walks.
Minor (5-1) struck out ten Nicholls batters, as only
Jeremy Hill,
Beau Faulk and
David Zorn were the only Colonels to earn hits on the afternoon. Faulk extended his hitting streak to seven games in the loss.
Jonathan Gonzales hit his second home run of the weekend, belting a solo homerun over the left field fence to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, for the first run of the game and only run of the inning.
Faulk had the first hit for the Colonels in the game, doubling to right field with two outs and battling through the count, but the Colonels couldn't get anything going and ended the inning on a flyout.
AMCC got three more runs in the fifth on a walk, two singles an error and sacrifice fly to go up 4-0, and got two more runs in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead.
Zorn used a bunt single to reach first, using a bad throw by the AMCC third baseman to advance to second.
Mike Barba put down a sacrifice bunt to push Zorn to third with just one out.
Philip Lyons grounded out to the shortstop to score Zorn making the score 6-1 Islanders. Hill singled to left center field, but a swinging strikeout ended the Nicholls inning.
After that score the Colonels would not get another runner on base for the rest of the game.
The Colonels will back in action on Tuesday night, hosting the Jackson State Tigers at 6:30 p.m. in Thibodaux.
