Tulane Offense Too Much For Colonels in 5-2 Loss

Final Stats NEW ORLEANS, La. – Going up against a team that was having one of its best offensive seasons in a while, the Tulane Green Wave lived up to the hype and scored five runs on nine hits in defeating the Nicholls baseball team 5-2 Tuesday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The Colonels (18-15) mustered nine hits on the night, but would only score twice leaving six runners on base, while a two-run bomb in just the second inning began the Tulane (22-10) scoring kick.

Starter Michael Suk (5-1) lasted 5.2 innings in taking the loss for Nicholls, giving up five runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Kory Delange saw his first action in a little over two weeks, lasting the final 2.1 innings giving up just one hit with a walk and strikeout.

The top of the Nicholls order came through for the Colonels on the night, as Mike Barba, Philip Lyons and Jeremy Hill each had two hits, while Michael LeGrange, Beau Faulk and Cody Dufrene each had one. Hill extends his hitting streak to a season-long eight games in the loss

Barba led off the game with a single to left center, but Lyons grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to put two outs on the board. Hill drilled a shot to deep centerfield that popped out the glove of the centerfielder to allow Hill to reach third. Unfortunately, a wild pitch that got past the Tulane catcher didn't go far enough to the backstop and caught Hill at home plate to end the inning.

A leadoff single in the second spelled doom for the Colonels in the very next at bat, as designated hitter Frank Florio hit a 370-yard home run over the right field fence to give the Green Wave a 2-0 lead.

Dufrene doubled off of the left field fence to begin the third, but a pop-up bunt, looking strikeout and groundout ended the Colonel half.

Hill doubled to left field for his first official hit of the night in the fourth with one out, but two strikeouts ended the inning for Nicholls.

In the bottom of the fifth, two hits at opposite ends of the inning resulted in another run for Tulane, as a double with two strikes and two outs scored a run from seconds as Tulane went up 3-0.

A single, sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and a walk for Tulane in the sixth put runners at the corners, as a double down the left field line scored both putting the Green Wave up 5-0 and ending Suk's night.

LeGrange singled through the left side after a Blake Bergeron strikeout in the seventh. Faulk followed that up with a single to right field advancing LeGrange to third, with Faulk moving to second after a wild pitch. Unfortunately for the Colonels, the next two batters struck out looking to end the inning.

After an Austin Flores ground out to start the eighth, Barba and Lyons each singled to put runners at first and second. A wild pitch advanced both to second and third, as Hill singled to center to drive in Barba for the Colonels' first score of the game. With runners at the corners, Bergeron hit a deep fly ball to right field for a sacrifice to score Lyons making the score 5-2 Tulane, with a LeGrange fly out ending the inning.

The Colonels close out their seven-game road trip with a three-game series against Central Arkansas this weekend.
