ALCORN, Miss. – The Nicholls State University tennis teams traveled to Alcorn State on Tuesday and both squads came away with victories as the men won 5-2, while the women notched a 4-3 win.

The match against Alcorn State was the Colonel men's team (9-8) final non-conference bout of the season with only Texas A&M-Corpus Christi left on the schedule. Nicholls, who is 3-1 in the Southland, is trailing undefeated Corpus in the standings, with the Islanders holding a 2-0 record in the SLC.

The women's team (6-11) snapped a four-match skid as they head into their final homestand. The Colonels will host Southern on Thursday before welcoming Central Arkansas and Northwestern State this weekend.

In the match against Alcorn, the men's team escaped with the doubles point with two one-point victories. Shayann Vaezzadeh and Dmitry Kozionov also won their match, taking the No. 2 point with an 8-4 win.

For singles, Damjan Despotovski, Palash Tiwari, Vaezzadeh and Guillermo Collado all earned wins for the Colonels. While Tiwari won the No. 3 flight in straight sets, Nicholls had to go three sets in its other three victories. All three Colonels came back from first set losses to lead Nicholls to its third win in its last four contests.

For the women, after dropping the doubles point, the Colonels overcame playing shorthanded to take four of the five singles matches to earn the victory.

Aubert, who came into the contest riding a 14-match winning streak, needed three sets for the second time in as many matches, but ultimately came out with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. The other four victories came in straight sets, with Maloo winning the No. 1 match, Janna Leeuwerik claimed the No. 3 contest and Catherine Gauthier won at No. 5.
