THIBODAUX  – Playing in its first home match in nearly a month, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team battled Southern University on Thursday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex and edged the Lady Jaguars, 4-3.

The victory was the Colonels (7-11) second straight and their second win at home this spring. Nicholls closes out its home scheduled this weekend with Southland Conference matches against Central Arkansas (Saturday) and Northwestern State (Sunday).

Against Southern, Nicholls jumped out to a 1-0 by winning the doubles point, despite having to forfeit the third match due to having only five players in the lineup. In the No. 1 flight, Parija Maloo and Janna Leeuwerik trumped Southern's Carlista Mohammed/ Gabrielle Moore, 8-3. For the No. 2 match, Catherine Gauthier and Marie Aubert came out on top against Lois Alexis/ Demetria Woods, 8-7, to give Nicholls the point.

In singles competition, Maloo and Aubert continued to anchor the lineup, winning their matches in dominating fashion. Maloo defeated Mohammed 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 match, while Aubert notched her 16th consecutive victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Woods.

In the No. 5 flight, Gauthier proved to be the deciding point as the freshman made easy work of SU's Morgan Taylor with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The win by Nicholls halted Southern's winning streak at four matches.
