Bears Defeat Colonels, 13-1

Final Stats CONWAY, Ark. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fell to the Central Arkansas Bears in the opening game of the Southland series on Friday 13-1 in seven innings.

Nicholls (18-16, 7-9 SLC) has been run-ruled by UCA (14-17, 8-8) three times since the Bears joined the Southland, with two coming in Conway. On the night the Colonels gave up season highs in opponent runs scored and hits.

Jeremy Hill had both hits for the Colonels on the night, extending his hitting streak to a career-long nine games with an RBI.

The Bears attacked starter Seth Webster (5-3) from the outset, as the senior gave up eight runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. The Colonels used three pitchers on the night, as the staff couldn't contain the UCA offense that pounded out 13 runs on 16 hits on the night.

After a pop fly, Philip Lyons walked to reach first to begin the Colonel first. Hill then singled to center moving Lyons to third and put runners in the corners. A shallow pop fly wasn't enough to bring in Lyons from third keeping the runners put for the second out, and was followed by a deeper fly ball to left field that was caught for the third out.

A leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning would be enough to get the Bears to strike first, as a looped single to left field scored the runner from second after a stolen base putting UCA up 1-0 early.

Mike Barba walked to lead off the third inning, and stole second with no outs. After a looking strikeout, Hill drilled a stand-up double to left center driving in Barba to tie the score at 1-1. The Colonels would end the inning with hits to the second baseman on a popup and groundout to close the frame.

UCA scored again in the second first on a throwing error by Bergeron that allowed an unearned run to cross the plate to go up 2-1, and after some bunt singles scored again after a comebacker to Webster's glove was able to get the runner at second and allow the second run to score to go up 3-1.

The Bears blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits to take a commanding 8-1 lead, chasing Webster from the game in the process and switching to Kory Delange who eventually out of the inning on a double play by the defense.

Delange would not get out of the next inning before giving up three runs on three hits, getting pulled for Merrick Ardoin who almost got out of the inning without further damage before UCA would score two more runs on three hits to go up 13-1 after five full innings. Ardoin finished the game for the Colonels.

First pitch for game two of the series is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Bears Stadium
