Colonels Can’t Avoid Sweep, Fall In Finale to UCA, 5-0

Final Stats CONWAY, Ark. – With their backs against the wall, the Nicholls baseball team did everything they could to avoid a series sweep for the first time since May of last year, but Central Arkansas scored in three consecutive late innings while the Colonels only had three runners in scoring position on the day falling to UCA 5-0 Sunday in Conway.

Nicholls (18-18, 7-11) has now lost four-straight for the first time all season, getting swept for the first time since Texas State did it toward the end of last season.

Jeremy Hill had one of Nicholls' six hits on the day, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, as Mike Barba, Blake Bergeron, Michael LeGrange and Cody Dufrene had the other five.

Colonel pitcher Mike Wisecarver (1-5) lasted at least six innings for the seventh time this year, going 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Wisecarver retired ten batters in order at one point in the game, before UCA struck in the sixth and seventh.

Barba singled to lead off the game, and was advanced to second on a groundout by Lyons and to third on a groundout by Hill. A fly ball to center ended the Colonel first.

With the only hit for the Colonels up until that point, Barba ended a streak of 17-straight retired Colonel batters, getting hit by a pitch in the sixth. Barba then stole second cleanly for only the second Nicholls player in scoring position. Already with two outs, Lyons hit a deep grounder to the second baseman and looked safe at first but was called out which would have resulted in the first run of the game as Barba was sliding home as the throw was just making it to first.

A stand-up double, followed by a legged-out triple by UCA gave the Bears the first strike going up 1-0. But the Colonels would get the lead runner out on the next play at home on a grounder, while Dufrene threw out a runner trying to steal second to end the inning.

Hill garnered the second hit of the game for Nicholls in the seventh putting one through the right side, but Blake Bergeron grounded into a double play to null the hit. LeGrange then drove a shot into center field for the second hit of the inning, but an Austin Flores strikeout ended the inning.

UCA scored another run in the seventh to go up 2-0, as the Colonels switched to reliever Mike Suk as a walk and single put two on as Suk came in, and in the very next at bat a single to left field scored the runner from second, but a strikeout and another caught runner ended the UCA inning.

Dufrene legged out a double to left field for Nicholls' fourth hit of the game. Richard followed that up with a single up the middle to put runners at the corners with one out. With Barba at the plate, a sharply hit grounder caused the 4-3 double play and kept Nicholls off the board.

UCA pulled away for good in the eighth, scoring three runs on two hits to go up 5-0 as the Colonels switched to Brad Delatte in relief of Suk.

Bergeron laced a single to left field in the ninth with two outs, but LeGrange grounded to the shortstop to get the force out at second to end the game.

The Colonels return from the road and begin an eight-game home stand on Tuesday, hosting the Alcorn State Braves at 6:30 p.m. in Thibodaux.
