THIBODAUX  – The Nicholls State University women's tennis team had its three-matching winning streak snapped on Sunday as the Colonels dropped a 6-1 decision against Northwestern State at the Colonel Tennis Complex.

The match was the final home contest for the Colonels (8-12, 2-8), with the season-finale set for April 18 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Beaumont, Texas. First serve is scheduled for noon.

Junior Parija Maloo was the lone Colonel to earn a victory against Northwestern State (14-4, 8-3), defeating Olga Bazhanova in No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4. Maloo came close to earning a sweep on the day, but she and teammate Janna Leeuwerik were outlasted in a tiebreaker in No. 1 doubles, 8-7 (4).

After going over two months without losing in singles, freshman Marie Aubert saw her 17-match winning streak come to an end after being defeated in straight sets against Tatiana Larina. The loss was Aubert's first in conference, putting her at 9-1 on the year.

Freshman Catherine Gauthier almost notched her first SLC victory, but was outlasted in three sets versus Amy Williams at No. 5. Gauthier took the first set 6-3, and after dropping the second, 6-1, came up short in the decisive set, 10-8.

Also falling in singles for the Colonels was Leeuwerik, who retired the match due to injury, and Marina Ljoshevska.

With the loss, Nicholls was eliminated from postseason contention.
