THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University softball team scored three runs in back-to-back innings and was led by a three RBI-day from Brittany Ezell as the Colonels defeated Southern University, 6-2, on Wednesday night at the Colonel Softball Complex.

With the win, Nicholls improves to 10-25 and 5-6 at home. Southern falls to 4-27 and has lost its last seven.

Ezell, a redshirt junior, led the offense with a career-best outing at the plate, driving in three runs on two hits. Ashton Bennett also had two of the Colonels' nine hits and scored twice, while Victoria Hugghins finished with two RBIs.

Katie Moulder (5-12) notched the win for the Colonels, tossing 3.2 innings with six strikeouts. She gave up one unearned run on three hits. Bennett came in for 2.2 innings of relief, striking out two while giving up one hit.

Following a three-up, three-down inning in their first at-bat, the Colonels used three hits in the second to take a 3-0 lead. After Hugghins made it 2-0 on a sacrifice flyout, Ezell capped the inning with an RBI single to right.

In the next frame, Rachel Moore set up the inning with a one-out double off the leftcenter wall. A single by Hugghins plated Bennett, who reached on a hit-by-pitch, before Ezell punched a single to center to give Nicholls a 6-0 lead.

Southern would score a run in the fourth and added one more in the seventh to make the final 6-2.

Gabrielle McDaniel pitched a complete game for the Lady Jags, giving up four earned on nine hits.
