Philip Lyons and Jeremy Hill each had three hits for Nicholls on the night in the loss to Lamar
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Trailing for most of the game, the Colonels baseball team made a furious comeback to tie the game in the sixth and take the lead in the very next inning, but in the end Nicholls couldn't maintain the lead falling in ten innings to the Lamar Cardinals 5-4 Friday night in Thibodaux.
Nicholls (18-19, 7-12 SLC) has now lost its last five games, while falling to Lamar (14-22, 7-12) for the fourth-straight contest dating back to last season. In two of the first three innings the Colonels left two runners on base, but could not capitalize on the chances, eventually leaving six runners on base during the night.
Colonels starter
Seth Webster gave up four runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, as
Jordan McCoy (0-3) took the loss for the Colonels, giving up the final run of the game to Lamar in the tenth on two hits. Lamar's Eric Harrington (2-6) went the distance pitching all ten innings giving up four runs on nine hits with 11 strikeouts.
Jeremy Hill and
Philip Lyons each finished the night with three hits and a run scored in five at bats, while
Mike Barba hit the second home run of his career Friday night, giving the Colonels their only lead of the game in the process. Incidentally, Hill tied Lyons for the longest hitting streak of the season which now stretches to 12 games for the senior designated hitter.
Blake Bergeron and
Beau Faulk each registered one hit on the night.
Lyons singled to right field with one out in the first inning, and was followed by Hill who singled to left to put runners at first and second. But a strike out and fielder's choice ground ended the Nicholls inning.
Lamar used two hits in the third inning to drive in the first run of the game, taking a 1-0 lead.
With an out in the bottom of the third, Barba was walked with a 3-2 count and advanced to second on Lyons' second hit of the game. After an infield pop fly for the second out, a strikeout ended the inning.
Lamar scored another run in the fourth using just one hit, as a walk and stolen base and shot through the middle would score the runner from second for a 2-0 Lamar lead.
The Colonels got into trouble in the sixth with runners in scoring position at two different points in the inning, as Lamar got its third run across, but Nicholls was able to get out of the inning only allowing the one run.
Back-to-back to singles by Lyons and Hill jumpstarted the Nicholls sixth, and Bergeron singled through the left side scoring Lyons, advancing to second and pushing Hill to third on the throw.
Michael LeGrange was intentionally walked to load the bases, and on the next at bat Faulk singled to right center scoring Hill from third keeping the bases loaded with no outs.
Austin Flores grounded into the 4-6-3 double play, but scored Bergeron to tie the game at 3-3. A swinging strikeout ended the Nicholls rally.
After a groundout, Barba took a 1-2 pitch over the left wall for a solo home run, giving Nicholls its first lead of the game 4-3 for the only score of the inning.
After a single to start the eighth for Lamar, the Colonels switched to
Brad Delatte and Lamar was able to garner another hit in the inning to tie the game at 4-4, but the defense got out of the inning leaving two runners on base.
McCoy came on in the tenth for Delatte and got in trouble as the first two runners reached after getting hit and getting a hit to put runners at first and second. After a failed pop-up bunt held the Lamar runners, a failed double steal getting the lead runner at third put two outs on the board and it looked as if the Colonels would get out of the inning, but a double by Cardinals infielder V.J. Bunner drove in Lamar's fifth run of the game regaining the lead and was thrown out at third to end the inning.
With two outs, Hill singled to left field, and reached second on an error by the left fielder.
David Zorn came in to pinch run for Hill, but a swinging strikeout ended the game.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, with the game being presented by Rouse's Supermarkets and televised live on WHNO-TV 20 locally and tape delayed in Beaumont on Fox 4.
