Colonel Blasts Aid in 10-4 Thumping Of Lamar

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – After a heartbreaking defeat to the Lamar Cardinals in extra innings the previous night, the Nicholls State University baseball team battled the entire way through and with the help of three home runs, including a three-run shot by senior Michael LeGrange in the sixth to give the Colonels the lead, defeated Lamar 10-4 Saturday afternoon.

The win snaps a season-long five-game losing streak for the Colonels, and four-game losing streak to Lamar dating back to last season.

Nicholls (19-19, 8-12 SLC) had their first televised game in history delayed by an hour, but a 15 mph wind that was blowing out of the park led to four home runs on the day by both teams, as Beau Faulk, Austin Flores and LeGrange all had shots for the Colonels for the third multi-home run day for the Colonels this season. Faulk and Flores hit back-to-back solo shots in the fifth inning.

A pitcher's duel for the first four innings gave way to just one run total, but starter Pat Shreve went 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on ten hits with two walks and a strikeout, exiting the game as the team was trailing. Donnie White (2-1) came on in relief and finished the game in dominating fashion, shutting down the Lamar (14-23, 7-13) offense giving up no hits in 3.2 innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Lamar used five pitchers in the game, as starter Carter Hahn took the loss giving up five runs on five hits.

For the second-straight game Philip Lyons finished with three hits on the day with an RBI and run scored, along with Beau Faulk who finished a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Austin Flores, who had not registered a hit in over 20 at bats coming into today finished with two hits with an RBI and two runs scored, to go along with David Zorn who finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. LeGrange's three-run homer gave him the most RBI's for any player on Saturday.

Seth Dornak drilled the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to open the third inning, giving Lamar a 1-0 lead.

Zorn singled up the middle for the Colonels' first hit of the game in the bottom of the third. But with one out already, a lineout, then Zorn getting caught trying to steal second ended the inning.

Lyons singled to left field to begin the Nicholls fourth, but the next three Nicholls batters went down in order to end the inning.

The Colonel bats finally woke up in the bottom of the fifth, as Faulk went the distance and then some in his at bat, before driving a shot to dead center field clearing the high fence to tie the game with a solo shot. Flores then took the second pitch in his at bat over the left field fence for back-to-back homers to take a 2-1 lead.

Lamar didn't wait long to retaliate, scoring three runs on four hits to retake the lead and go up 4-2 in the sixth.

Lyons singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and Hill walked to put runners on first and second. Blake Bergeron put down a sacrifice bunt and the Lamar catcher tried to get the force out at third but an errant throw to the third baseman went into left field scoring Lyons to make the score 4-3, keeping two runners on with no outs. LeGrange then stepped up to the plate and hit his three-run bomb over the left field fence to take a 6-4 lead. Faulk and Flores both singled in their at bats to put two runners back on and Cody Dufrene advanced the runners to second and third with a perfectly played sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning. Zorn then singled with a chopper up the middle to drive in both runners to take an 8-4 lead. Mike Barba then singled to center field to keep the rally going. After stealing second and third to put two in scoring position, Lyons hit a deep enough sacrifice fly to left field bringing in Zorn putting the Colonels up 9-4 for the last run of the inning.

Faulk doubled to left field in the bottom of the seventh with one out in the inning. Flores hit a deep fly ball to centerfield that was misplayed allowing Flores to move to second and Faulk to third. Dufrene then hit a sacrifice fly to center driving in Faulk putting the Colonels up 10-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Colonels loaded the bases after a single by Lyons, walk to Hill and single by Bergeron. But with one out the last two batters went down in order to end the inning.

The Colonels will play the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Military Appreciation Day, where all military personnel can attend for free.
