Colonels Fall In Finale to Cardinals, 12-4

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Looking to win the series over the Lamar Cardinals on Sunday, the visitors scored ten runs in the first inning alone holding the Colonels to just four runs on seven hits in a 12-4 series loss at Ray E. Didier Field.

Nicholls (19-20, 8-13) has now lost three consecutive Southland series', and four of the last five.

Jeremy Hill and Austin Flores had the two biggest hits for the Colonels on the day, as Flores drove in two runs in the second on a double, while Hill, who had his 12-game hitting streak snapped on Saturday, started a new streak with a two-run opposite field home run in the fifth. Five other Colonels finished the day with one hit.

Mike Wisecarver (1-6) faced just six batters in his shortest outing of the year, giving up five runs on two hits with two walks in the loss. Nicholls used five pitchers on the day as Michael Suk gave up seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits with three strikeouts and a walk. The staff settled down as Kory Delange, Merrick Ardoin and Kelby Langston gave up just three hits for the rest of the game with four combined strikeouts.

Wisecarver only got one batter out in the first inning, as with the bases loaded Lamar's Garrett Autrey drilled a deep fly ball to right-center causing Barba and LeGrange to collide in the outfield resulting in an in-the-park grand slam to give the Cards a 4-0 lead. Michael Suk came on in relief, as Lamar would score five more runs with still just one out to go up 9-0. A sacrifice fly drove in another Cardinal run to go up 10-0.

Lamar got one more in the second to go up 11-0, using two hits to expand its lead.

After a groundout to start the home half of the inning, consecutive singles by Michael LeGrange and Blake Bergeron was enough for a Flores double to drive in both to make the score 11-2 Lamar.

Mike Barba walked to lead off the third, and Philip Lyons singled to the first baseman to put two runners on with no outs. However, the next three Colonel batters went down in order to end the inning.

Lamar used a two out rally to plate another run in the fourth, taking a 12-2 lead.

In the fifth, Matt Richard singled to left center to begin the fifth, after a strikeout and groundout, Hill homered to left field to make the score 12-4 Cardinals.

Hill walked to lead off the eighth inning, and Beau Faulk followed that up with a single to put two runners on. A pop fly to right field allowed Hill to tag up and advance to third putting runners at the corners with just one out, but the Colonels couldn't capitalize and left both on as the last two Nicholls batters went down in order.

The Colonels will return to action on Tuesday, hosting the South Alabama Jaguars in Thibodaux.
