LeGrange was 3-for-3 in the 11-3 win over South Alabama Tuesday night
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – A five-run fifth inning blew the doors off of a tie game between the Nicholls baseball team and the South Alabama Jaguars, as the Colonels tied a season-high in hits in an 11-3 win over USA Tuesday night in Thibodaux.
Nicholls (20-20) finished the night with 15 hits, scoring multiple runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings to pull away from the Jaguars (16-25) for good.
Kory Delange (3-0) earned the win giving up just three runs on six hits in five innings of work, fanning seven Jags batters, as the group of
Mike Wisecarver,
Brad Delatte and
Jordan McCoy just gave up three hits for the duration of the night.
Michael LeGrange finished the night going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, single and triple to finish a home run short of the cycle, with two RBI's and a run scored, while
Jeremy Hill Philip Lyons,
Matt Richard and
Beau Faulk each finished with two. Hill, Faulk,
Austin Flores and
Cody Dufrene were each driven in twice on the night.
The Colonels got a two-out rally started in the first with single by Hill to centerfield. Faulk then singled to left field, Hill advancing to third on the throw. LeGrange doubled down the left field line scoring Hill giving the Colonels the 1-0 lead.
Blake Bergeron then singled to the second baseman scoring Faulk from third for a 2-0 lead. Flores singled to the shortstop scoring LeGrange for the third Nicholls run of the inning.
Richard singled through the left side to begin the second inning for the Colonels' sixth hit of the game. Richard stole second, and Lyons was walked to put two runners on for the second straight inning. After an early pitching change for the Jaguars, a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third with a strikeout following. A fielder's choice groundout and strikeout ended the Nicholls inning.
LeGrange singled up the middle to begin the bottom of the third, but a 5-4-3 double play put two outs on the board. A groundout ended the inning.
USA tied the game in the fifth, getting three runs on three hits with the game over halfway through.
With one out in the fifth, Hill singled through the right side, and then on a slapper by Faulk that scampered through the right side pushed Hill to third. LeGrange hit a deep enough fly ball to right field for the sacrifice RBI, giving Nicholls the lead back at 4-3. Bergeron and Flores were walked in order to load the bases with two outs, and on a Dufrene strikeout the pitch got past the catcher allowing Faulk to score. Richard was plunked in the arm on the first pitch of his at bat to drive in Bergeron, with Lyons singling through the middle to drive in Flores to take a 7-3 lead. A balk scored Dufrene from third for the last run of the inning, giving Nicholls an 8-3 lead.
With two outs in the sixth, LeGrange tripled to right-center for his second three-bagger of the year and 12th extra base hit of the season. A strikeout ended the Nicholls inning.
Flores reached first after an error by the shortstop, but that would be the beginning of South Alabama's troubles in the seventh, as four singles by Dufrene, Richard, Lyons and Barba drove in the first two runs to go up 10-3. A 4-6-3 double play scored Richard making the score 11-3 for the final score of the game.
The Colonels return to the diamond this weekend, hosting Texas State in conference action
