Bergeron hit two homeruns on Tuesday in Nicholls' 6-0 win over Jackson State
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Heading into an important Southland Conference matchup over the weekend, the Nicholls baseball team didn't overlook the Jackson State Tigers on Tuesday, jumping out to an early lead which grew thanks to two homeruns by
Blake Bergeron and a dominant two-hit performance by Michael Suk on the mound en route to a 6-0 win.
Suk (5-0) garnered the third complete game for a Nicholls (17-12) pitcher in the last four games, shutting out the Tigers (18-10) with just one walk and a career-high ten strikeouts on just 96 pitches. It's Suk's longest outing of the year, surpassing the eight innings he threw against Alcorn State Feb. 29.
After hitting a monster shot on Saturday over the left field fence last Saturday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Bergeron hit two more on that same side of the field on Tuesday night, his first multi-homerun game as a Colonel. Bergeron finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored to lead the Colonels at the plate, followed by
David Zorn's 2-for-3 night to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Mike Barba Philip Lyons and
Jeremy Hill each had one hit for the Colonels on the night.
Barba singled through the left side to begin the inning, stealing second in the very next at bat. Lyons then put down a bunt single putting runners at the corners. Lyons stole second, but Hill would get walked to load the bases. Faulk was hit on the side to drive in Barba putting Nicholls up 1-0.
Michael LeGrange hit a sacrifice fly to left field driving in Lyons, but caught Hill out at second to get two on the play. Bergeron took the second pitch he saw in his at bat and blasted it over the left field fence for a two-run homer, giving Nicholls a 4-0 lead.
Austin Flores walked, but
Chase Garrett struck out to end the inning.
Zorn singled up the middle to begin the second inning, and after two outs Hill singled through the left side to put two runners on, but Zorn was picked off to end the inning.
Bergeron hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, a solo shot, the only run for the inning putting Nicholls up 5-0.
Garrett reached on a walk in the bottom of the seventh. Zorn singled on a bunt to the Jackson State first baseman, and with Garrett charging to third slid in time to be called safe, allowing Zorn to race to second putting two in scoring position for the Colonels.
Byron Cobb came on to pinch run and Barba hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Cobb to go up 6-0, with Zorn tagging up and reaching third before the throw got in. Zorn would not make it any further as a ground out and fly out ended the inning.
The Colonels kick off a seven-game road trip on Thursday, taking on UT-Arlington in a three-game Southland Conference series.
