Barba had two of the Colonels' seven hits on the night
Final Stats ARLINGTON, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team rallied, down in a two-run hole for most of the game in the top of the eighth, until UTA came back and scored two in the very next frame to drop the second game of the series to UTA 4-2.
Pat Shreve (3-5) worked out of many tight spots on the night, but took the loss for the Colonels going 7.1 innings giving up three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts.
Mike Barba paced the Colonels at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while
Philip Lyons,
Jeremy Hill,
Michael LeGrange,
Blake Bergeron and
Cody Dufrene all garnered hits on the night for Nicholls.
LeGrange doubled to kick start the Colonel second inning, but the next three Colonel batters went down in order to squander the scoring opportunity.
A bases clearing double for UTA in the bottom of the third with two outs put the Mavs up 2-0, getting three hits in the inning to drive in both runs.
With two outs in the seventh, Bergeron drove a shot out to centerfield that bounced off of the fence, but earned a double for the senior Colonel infielder. Unfortunately, a swinging strikeout ended the inning.
Dufrene singled to centerfield to begin the eighth inning. A hard hit chopper by
Matt Richard that bounced off of the shortstop and found its way to the second baseman got Dufrene out at second, but allowed Richard to reach on a fielder's choice. Barba then doubled to center putting two runners in scoring position for Nicholls for the first time all night. Lyons then singled to left center to drive in Richard to pull Nicholls to within one and put runners at the corners. Hill hit a deep enough fly ball to score Barba with a sacrifice fly and tie the game. Lyons then advanced to second on a balk by UTA relief pitcher Adam Westbrook.
Beau Faulk was walked to put two back on for Nicholls, but a groundout ended the inning.
In the very next inning Preston Beck hit a no-doubter over the right field fence to give the lead back to UTA 3-2, and scored another after miscues by the Colonels and another single scoring the second run for the Mavs in the inning.
The series concludes on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
