Wisecarver earned his first win of the year on Saturday against UTA
Final Stats ARLINGTON, Texas – Like it had done on Thursday against UTA, the Colonels jumped out to a large lead early, this time holding on for the duration defeating the Mavericks 8-4 in likely the final meeting between the two schools.
Nicholls (18-14, 7-8 SLC) scored six runs in the first two innings, getting just two more runs in the next seven innings, but it would be enough of a lead to hold off UTA (20-12, 8-7 SLC) for good.
With such a large lead to work with, starter
Mike Wisecarver (1-4) pitched a gem on Saturday, going 6.2 innings allowing nine hits with no earned runs, four strikeouts and no walks. The Colonels would use a combination of
Brad Delatte,
Jordan McCoy and
Donnie White to close the door on UTA and preserve the win.
Blake Bergeron hit his third homerun of the week, and fourth in his last six games, as he was one of four Colonels to garner two hits on the day, including
Mike Barba,
Philip Lyons and
Jeremy Hill, who extended his hitting streak to a season-long seven games. Hill and Bergeron also drove in two runs each, while Lyons scored twice as the Colonels 1-6 hitters combined for ten of the 11 hits on the day.
Barba singled over the head of the shortstop into left centerfield in the opening at bat of the game, and was followed by a Lyons single through the right side to advance Barba to third to put runners at the corners. The hit parade continued with a Hill single to left field to drive in Barba for the first score of the game. Bergeron loaded the bases after an error by the third baseman, still with no outs in the first inning.
Michael LeGrange walked to drive in Lyons putting the Colonels up 2-0.
Beau Faulk grounded into the 5-4-3 double play, but scored Hill at third and advanced Bergeron to third with Nicholls up 3-0. A pop fly ended the Colonel inning.
Back-to-back singles put Wisecarver in a tight spot early, but the Colonel defense turned a grounder into a double play and pop fly thereafter ended the UTA first inning and the scoring threat.
Cody Dufrene led off the second the same way for Nicholls, hitting a single to left field.
David Zorn hit a grounder to the shortstop, but a bad throw to the second baseman resulted in an extra base for both Zorn and Dufrene, putting both in scoring position for the second inning with no outs. After a swinging strikeout, Lyons singled to left center driving in Dufrene to put the Colonels up 4-0. Hill drilled a shot to right field with Lyons already on the move and scored Zorn, while Lyons advanced to third putting runners at the corners. After a pitching change, Bergeron took the first pitch he saw off of the new UTA hurler, and drilled it into left center driving in Lyons for a 6-0 lead. LeGrange grounded into the fielder's choice catching Bergeron at second, but advanced Hill to third putting Colonels back on the corners but a line out ended the Colonel inning.
After two sky-high fly outs in the fourth inning, Bergeron drilled a fastball left over the plate over the fence in left center for the Colonels' seventh run of the game to go up 7-0.
A single by UTA in the bottom of the sixth, followed by a three-base error on a bad throw by
Austin Flores allowed the first UTA run to cross the plate, with another crossing on a sacrifice groundout to make the score 7-2, but the Colonels got the last two outs to end the Mavs inning.
LeGrange belted his 11th double of the year with one out in the top of the seventh to get another Colonel runner into scoring position.
Beau Faulk singled through the middle giving LeGrange the go-ahead to try and score, getting in before the ball reached the catcher putting Nicholls up 8-2, the only run for Nicholls in the inning as a double play ended the drive.
UTA scored two more on a bases clearing double as McCoy came on in relief for Delatte making the score 8-4 in the bottom of the eighth. But no more runners would cross the plate in the inning, as McCoy would retire the last two batters of the inning to get out of the jam.
The Colonels will stay on the road, taking the short drive east to New Orleans to take on the Tulane Green Wave Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
