Colonels Take Series with Doubleheader Spilt

Final Stats 1 | Final Stats 2 THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team outhit the Northwestern State Demons over the course of both games of a doubleheader on Sunday, as the Colonels earned a split dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision in game one while jumping out to a large lead and not looking back in an 8-4 finale win.
 
Nicholls (25-25, 12-17 SLC) claimed their first series win in nearly a month and have won the last two against the Demons (18-30, 13-17) dating back to 2011.
 
Trailing 2-1 in game two, the Colonels exploded for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the third sending eight batters to the plate in the inning to regain the lead 5-2.
 
Nicholls finished with double-digit hits for the second time on the day, led by Jeremy Hill who extended his hitting streak to 12 games to tie his career high with four hits in the contest, while Blake Bergeron finished a double short of the cycle going 3-for-5 with four RBI as he belted his seventh home run of the season.
 
Michael Suk (7-1) continued to impress going seven innings giving up three runs, two earned, with two walks and five strikeouts. Jordan McCoy came on and pitched the final two innings giving up an unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts.
 
The Colonels scored runs in five innings, accumulating 14 hits on the day and capitalized on their opportunities leaving only nine men on base during the game.
 
The Colonels will be back in action on Tuesday night, taking on nationally-ranked LSU at 6:30 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.
 
Game One: Northwestern State 3, Nicholls 2
 
In game one the Colonels left 12 runners on base in the and still had a chance to win the game in the final inning but eventually fell to the Demons 3-2.
 
Down two runs in the final inning, Nicholls was able to plate one run with a runner still at third with two outs, but a tough grounder ended the game preserving the Demon win.
 
Nicholls finished with 10 hits in the game, as Michael LeGrange and David Zorn each finished with two hits to lead the Colonels.
 
Northwestern State was held to just four hits in the game, but a two-run error in the seventh put the Demons up 3-1. Patrick Shreve (4-6) earned the loss giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts, while Joe Scanio (5-3) came in for the win with Carson Goldsmith earning the save.
