SFA Downs Colonels, 7-2

Final Stats NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Hoping to capitalize on the early success from yesterday, the Nicholls baseball team once again scored first, but the SFA Lumberjacks scored more late using a five-run seventh to take game two of the series against the Colonels 7-2 Friday afternoon.

A close contest for most of the day, SFA (22-31, 15-17) got hot in the seventh inning belting six hits extend its lead to six with only three innings remaining, while the Colonels (26-27, 13-18) got ten hits in the game but could only score two runs in the game.

Patrick Shreve (4-7) took the loss for the Colonels after giving up five runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Four Colonels finished the day with two hits as Blake Bergeron, Matt Richard, Michael LeGrange and David Zorn reached that feat, while Jeremy Hill extended his hitting streak to 15 games and has reached base safely in 28-straight games.

After a three-up, three down first, Bergeron led off the second with a single to right-center. LeGrange followed that up with another single to the same part of the park advancing Bergeron to third. On the next play LeGrange got picked off at first for the first out of the inning. Flores hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score a charging Bergeron who ran into SFA's catcher to touch the plate for a 1-0 Nicholls lead.

With two outs in the fourth, Hill singled through the middle with two strikes to reach first. LeGrange was down to his final strike when he singled through the left side to put two runners on, but Hill was picked off at second to end the inning.

A leadoff double for SFA in the inning proved costly for the Colonels as a single to centerfield drove in the tying run to knot the game at one. After a walk, another double scored another SFA run for a 2-1 Jacks lead.

Shreve got into trouble in the seventh inning after loading the bases, being relieved for Jordan McCoy and facing his first batter, a suicide squeeze bunt single scored another SFA run for a 3-1 Jacks lead. Another stand-up double scored two more for a 5-1 SFA lead with still one out in the inning. After a strikeout on a wild pitch, another SFA single scored the final two Lumberjack runs of the inning to go up 7-1.

Faulk singled to left field to open the eighth inning. A walk to Cody Dufrene put runners on as Zorn singled through the left side to load the bases. A pop-up out was the first of the inning for Nicholls, but Richard singled through the left side to score Faulk to make the score 7-2. Unfortunately a rare 1-2-3 double play ended the inning.

The regular season finale against the Lumberjacks begins with first pitch at 1 p.m. Saturday in Nacogdoches.
