Jacks Steal Finale with Walk off Single in Ninth, 5-4

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – After two ties and two lead changes, the Nicholls State University baseball team and SFA Lumberjacks went to the wire in the regular season finale on Saturday. But a game-ending single by SFA's Ricardo Sanchez scored the winning run for the Jacks, ending the Colonels' season with a 5-4 loss.

Nicholls (26-28, 13-19 SLC) held the lead at two different stages of the contest, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and then taking a 4-3 lead in the seventh. All four runs for the Colonels were scored with two outs in the inning, but the Jacks (23-31, 16-17) came back to take the lead in the fifth and tie the game in the seventh.

Mike Suk (7-1) started the game for the Colonels and went seven innings scattering nine hits and giving up four runs, three earned, with a walk and six strikeouts. Brad Delatte (0-2) pitched the last 1.1 innings giving up the final run on two hits with a walk taking the loss.

Matt Richard finished with his second two hit game of the series and third in his last four games, along with Austin Flores and Cody Dufrene who also went 2-for-4 on the afternoon. The Colonels finished with ten hits on the afternoon as a team.

After two strikeouts, Faulk singled down the right field line for the first hit of the game in the second inning. Flores followed that up with a bloop single to short left field advancing Faulk to second. A single up the middle by Dufrene scored Faulk from second for the 1-0 Nicholls lead, and advancing Flores to second to keep the inning alive. Another single by Zorn up the SFA infield scored Flores from second to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead. A fly out ended the Nicholls inning.

After a leadoff single by SFA's Freddy Villalobos, the Jacks were down to two outs after a strikeout and groundout. However a Zach Benson single to centerfield scored Villalobos from second to make the score 2-1. After another SFA single, a deep fly ball to center field ended the Jacks inning.

A sacrifice fly with runners at second and third by Villalobos scored the Jacks second run of the game to tie the game at two in the fourth. Another single by Bryce Cummings in the inning scored SFA's third run of the game to take a 3-2 lead.

Dufrene singled up the middle to start the Colonel fifth. A sacrifice bunt by Zorn and chopper by Philip Lyons advanced him to third, but another grounder to the shortstop ended the Nicholls inning.

Down to its last out of the sixth inning, Michael LeGrange doubled to left-center and Faulk was walked to put two runners on. With two strikes against him, Flores singled down the left field line scoring LeGrange to tie the game 3-3 for the only Colonel run of the inning.

With two more outs in the seventh inning, Matt Richard singled to the shortstop and reached first. In a lengthy Jeremy Hill at bat, Richard stole second on the errant throw to the shortstop that skidded into centerfield and took third and charged home on the throw in and got in before the tag to score giving the Colonels the lead back 4-3.

A bunt single then throwing error by Suk on the play put SFA's Benson on second. A single by Hunter Dozier scored Benson and tied the game at four.

A Villalobos single in to begin the ninth was the start of the SFA ninth, and a sacrifice bunt advanced him to second. In the very next at bat Sanchez singled to right-center scoring Villalobos from second for the game-winning RBI to make the final 5-4.
