Colonels Club Braves, 17-4

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Against the Alcorn State on Wednesday, the Colonels baseball team trailed at two different points in the game, but the Colonels scored 14 unanswered runs from the fourth through eighth innings to outslug the Braves 17-4 Wednesday night in Thibodaux.

The Colonels (22-22) are now 10-1 in midweek games, finishing the year undefeated at home against non-conference opponents in-between weekend games.

Combined, Blake Bergeron and Philip Lyons combined for eight of the Colonels' 17 hits on the night with Lyons going 4-for-6 with two doubles, four RBI's and three runs scored, while Bergeron finished 4-for-5 with two RBI's and three runs scored. Eight Colonels finished with hits on the night, including Jeremy Hill's fourth home run of the year on his three-hit night, along with David Zorn's two.

Nicholls was not shy about using its entire relief pitching staff in the game, using seven arms on the night, six after starter Kory Delange. Earning the win was Jacob Rodrigue (1-0), who came on in the fifth after the Colonels regained the lead needing just eight pitches to retire the side in his inning of work.

After hitting the first batter in the game, Delange would get out the next two batters before a wild pitch allowed that runner to score from third to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.

Lyons singled on a bunt to the second baseman to reach first. A groundout advanced the Colonel second baseman to second with one out, with Lyons stealing third base on the next play. After a Hill walk, Beau Faulk grounded out to the second baseman scoring Lyons from third to tie the game at one. Michael LeGrange took the third pitch in his at bat and doubled down the line in left field scoring Hill from second to take a 2-1 lead. Bergeron kept the hit parade going, lacing a single to right field to score LeGrange for a 3-1 Nicholls lead, but Bergeron got caught trying to advance to second base on the throw home to LeGrange to end the inning.

The Braves took the lead back with one swing of the bat, as Alcorn's Eduardo Gonzales took a Mike Wisecarver pitch over the left field fence with two runners on for a three-run blast going up 4-3.

With two outs, the Colonels looked like they would go down in order, but back-to-back walks to Adam Seal and Cody Dufrene put two runners on in the bottom of the fourth. Zorn took advantage and doubled to left field scoring Seal to tie the game 4-4. Lyons followed that up using a chopper down the left field line to leg out a double, then advanced to third on a throwing error. Flores then singled to the shortstop to bring in Lyons for the 7-4 Nicholls lead.

The Colonels exploded for five runs in the fifth, using singles by Hill, Bergeron, Seal and Lyons and a throwing error to take a commanding 12-4 lead.

A two-out double by Bergeron kept the Nicholls sixth alive as he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Seal walked to put runners at the corners, and with Dufrene at the plate, another wild pitch resulted in Seal charging for second with the errant throw by the Alcorn State catcher going into center field allowing Bergeron to score from third to make the score 13-4 Nicholls.

After getting hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the seventh, Lyons doubled to put runners at second and third. Ray Eureste hit a sacrifice fly bringing in Zorn and advancing Lyons to second to put the Colonels up 14-4. Lyons would only need a slow trot to score, as Hill belted the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for a two-run bomb to take a 16-4 lead.

Singles by Bergeron and Dufrene in the eighth put runners at first and second with just one out in the inning. A wild pitch advanced both to second and third with Zorn at the plate. A misplayed ball by the Alcorn State pitcher allowed a charging Bergeron to score from third for the final run of the game to make the score 17-4.

The Colonels hit the road this weekend, taking on the UTSA Roadrunners in conference action beginning Friday night.
