Colonels Fall To Roadrunners, 14-1

Final Stats SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team struggled out of the gate against the UTSA Roadrunners Friday night, eventually falling 14-1 at Roadrunner Field.

Nicholls (22-23, 9-16 SLC) managed a run on the night finishing with nine hits as a team, as Matt Richard, Jeremy Hill and Blake Bergeron finished with two hits each on the night. Hill extended his hitting streak to seven games in the process, and reached base safely in his 20th consecutive game.

Nicholls starter Seth Webster (5-5) had a tough outing, giving up nine runs on eight hits in just .2 innings in the loss, while Kory Delange gave up two runs on one hit, and Mike Wisecarver pitched the remaining innings giving up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

After a strikeout, Richard singled to the shortstop for the first hit of the game. In the very next at bat Hill singled through the middle, advancing Richard to third to put runners at the corners. Unfortunately, the next two batters went down in order to end the first.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for UTSA in the bottom of the first, as a double drove in the first two runs of the game, while another single drove in a third Roadrunner run to go up 3-0. The Roadrunners would continue to get hits off of Webster, eventually changing to Delange after UTSA scored eight runs off of the starter. Delange wouldn't get much further, allowing three more runners to score to give the Roadrunners an 11-0 lead, as Wisecarver would come on to get the final out of the inning.

In the fourth, two groundouts had the Colonels reeling, but back-to-back singles by Bergeron and Austin Flores put runners on in the inning. A walk to Cody Dufrene loaded the bases, but a swinging strikeout ended the Colonel threat.

UTSA plated another run in the bottom of the fifth, using three hits to take a 12-0 lead with four innings left to play.

Michael LeGrange led off the sixth with a single through the left side, and was followed by Bergeron who singled up the middle. Successive ground outs advanced the runners, eventually scoring LeGrange for the first Nicholls score of the game and only run of the inning.

The Roadrunners got two more runs in the fifth on two more hits to increase their lead to 14-1, accumulating their 14th and 15th hits of the night.

Philip Lyons reached on an error, and after a fly out Hill singled to left center to put two on with just one out. But a chopper to the shortstop resulted in the 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Game two of the series begins on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
