Colonels Fall To Jackson State, 9-6

Final Stats JACKSON, Miss. – The Nicholls State University baseball team struggled to maintain the two leads the team had during its contest with Jackson State, eventually falling to the Tigers 9-6 in non-conference action.

With a 4-2 lead, the Colonels (23-24) gave up five runs in the fourth and fifth innings and did not score after the sixth as the Tigers (32-14) improve to 18-1 at home this year.

Donnie White (2-2) earned the loss for the Colonels, allowing two runs with three walks, four wild pitches and a hit batter.

Jeremy Hill and Matt Richard extended their hitting streaks to nine and seven games in the loss, as Hill went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, with Richard going 2-for-5 with a run scored. Beau Faulk finished with two hits also on the night, driving in two RBI as the three combined for six of Nicholls' eight nits on the night.

After a groundout, Richard reached first on an error by the JSU shortstop. Hill followed that up with another grounder to the shortstop getting Richard at second on the fielder's choice. Hill stole second with Faulk at the plate, as the Colonel first baseman then singled up the middle scoring Hill for the 1-0 lead, but the inning ended as Faulk was caught trying to advance to second on the throw to home.

The Tigers took the lead using three hits in the home half of the inning to go up 2-1.

Already with an out in the third, David Zorn singled through the left side and then stole second. Philip Lyons was walked on five pitches to put runners at first and second for Nicholls. Richard singled to short left field, loading the bases for Hill who singled right field driving in Zorn and Lyons, advancing Richard to third for a 3-2 Colonel lead. Faulk struck again as he hit a high fly ball to the center fielder allowing Richard to tag up from third to give the Colonels a 4-2 lead. A line drive to the second baseman ended the Nicholls inning.

Kelby Langston came on in the fourth and after getting the first out of the inning got into some trouble after loading the bases on a hit, walk and hit batter, as another Jackson State run crossed the plate on an infield single to make the score 4-3. A bases-loaded walk tied the game at four and another hit batter gave Jackson State the lead back 5-4 ending Langston's night as White came on to get the final out of the inning.

With two outs already in the fifth inning, Hill singled to left field for his second hit of game, while Faulk earned his second hit right after to right field, advancing Hill to third on the play. Michael LeGrange went the distance in his at bat before drilling a single to center field scoring Hill from third to tie the game at five. Blake Bergeron flied out to center field, but catcher's interference was called and was awarded first to load the bases. However, a groundout to the second baseman ended the inning.

White struggled in the next inning as Jackson State got two runs on the home side to take a 7-5 lead as there were four wild pitches and an error as Brad Delatte came on in relief to get the final out of the inning.

Cody Dufrene was hit to begin the sixth inning but a Zorn fielder's choice grounder to the second baseman forced Dufrene out at second. Zorn advanced to second on a balk, moving to third on a wild pitch. Lyons grounded out to the second baseman driving in Zorn to pull the Colonels to within one of JSU at 7-6. Richard followed up with a single to short right field, but a popup ended the inning for the Colonels.

A two-out, bases clearing single put two more runs on the board for JSU as the Tigers took a 9-6 lead in the bottom of the eighth.

The Colonels return to action on Friday for the last three games of the home schedule, hosting the Northwestern State Demons.
