The Colonels will take on Oklahoma and Tulsa this weekend
THIBODAUX, La. – After earning a split in Mobile over the weekend, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team heads to the Sooner State for one of its toughest weekends of the year taking on the University of Oklahoma Friday night and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Sunday afternoon.
Nicholls opened the season with a two-game set in Alabama, falling to South Alabama 2-1 before defeating Spring Hill College 5-1. Their six goals so far this year is third in the league, while
Jess Coates who scored goals in each game over the weekend is tied for third in the Southland in that category, while being tied for fifth in points with five.
The Sooners, under first-year head coach Matt Potter and in the midst of a four-game home stand, is 1-1 on the season after defeating former Big 12 member Nebraska in their opener 2-1, before falling to LSU 1-0 in double overtime on Monday. The Sooners were picked to finish seventh in the preseason Big 12 poll ahead of Iowa State and new member TCU. Renae Cuellar leads the Sooners with two goals on the year, while goalie Kelsey Devonshire has allowed only two goals with 12 saves.
Tulsa only played one game over the weekend, and that was a 3-0 shutout of Weber State at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. Picked to finish sixth in the Conference USA in the preseason, Rebecca Handley scored two of Tulsa's goals against Weber State, while preseason all-conference selection Claire Hulcer had two assists. Senior goalie Katie Bykowski, the CUSA Defensive Player of the Week, and the defense held the Wildcats to just ten shots, three being on goal.
