Harris had ten blocks and hit .360 in the five-set win over UNO Tuesday
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – After rolling in the first set 25-14, the UNO Privateers won a close second and third set pushing the Colonels to the brink before rallying to take the fourth and fifth set in dominating fashion to win 25-14,-22-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-6 Tuesday night in Thibodaux.
Nicholls (3-6) hit .216 in the match with 52 kills, but had a season-high 18 team blocks and 68 digs to hold New Orleans (3-6) to a negative attack percentage in the final two sets.
The Colonels had three players earn double-doubles on the night beginning with senior
Jennifer Brandt who led all players with a team and season-high 17 kills and 14 digs, followed by redshirt junior
Jasmine Harris's 12 kills and ten blocks and senior
Nancy Taylor's 28 assists and 13 digs.
Jeanne Logarbo had another solid game with 19 digs to pace the Colonels back row.
There were a total of 15 ties and nine lead changes during the game, with seven of the ties and four of the lead changes coming in the second set alone.
Nicholls exploded to ten point lead in the first set, going up 12-2 with an eight-point run to steal the momentum early. Even after making the game 12-7, the Privateers couldn't get any kind of rhythm going after, being held to just eight more points in the set as another large run put Nicholls up 25-14 for the set win.
After regrouping in the second, UNO was able to key in on the Colonels as they got much better offensively to the tune of 16 kills and a .220 hitting percentage. The last tie of the set came with the score 9-9, as the Privateers scored three points to take a lead they would not relinquish even after Nicholls came within one point at 22-21.
The third was another closely contested set at the end, after the Colonels took a 3-1 lead to open the frame the Privateers rattled off the next five points to claim the lead at 6-4 and held anywhere from a two to five point lead over Nicholls until the home team clawed back and made it a one point game with the score 24-23, before ending the set with their 13
th kill.
With their backs against the wall, Nichols again didn't make the match easier in the first 14 points of the fourth, splitting five ties and four lead changes with the Privateers. But runs of six, three and four points catapulted the Colonels to the 25-15 win to force the deciding fifth set.
The momentum shift clearly in the Colonels' favor was used to go up 8-2 to force the side change, as Nicholls scored on seven of the last 11 points to take the match.
In the final set the Colonels converted 85-percent of their sideout chances and was 65-percent (56-86) effective for the duration of the match.
The Colonels open Southland Conference play on Thursday, hosting the Lamar Lady Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. in the second game of a three-match home stand.
