Linebacker Rashar Knight earned one of three sacks last weekend
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University football team will play its second-straight Football Bowl Subdivision opponent to open the season as the Colonels take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Kickoff at H.A. Chapman Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on the Colonel Sports Radio Network, with pregame coverage set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
The matchup will be the first meeting between the programs; however, Nicholls third-year head coach Charlie Stubbs was the offensive coordinator for the Golden Hurricane from 2003-06. The Colonels (0-1) will be looking for its third win over a FBS opponent and to snap its current 11-game losing streak.
Nicholls (0-1) is coming off a near upset in its opener at South Alabama, which saw the Colonels within striking distance of the game-winning touchdown in the final minute. The Colonel offense had four plays inside the 20-yard line, but could not generate its first touchdown of the season.
Tight end
Nick Scelfo led the team with 40 yards on three receptions, while
LaQuintin Caston had 69 yards rushing. On defense,
Jordan Piper came up a tackle shy of his career-high with 12, and
Chris Bermond and
Siegan Vergenal added 10 each. Vergenal was also credited with his sixth career forced fumble.
Although the Colonel defense did not allow a touchdown against USA last week; it may need an even better performance as Tulsa (1-1) has scored nine offensive touchdowns in its first two games. The Hurricane lit up the scoreboard in their last outing, defeating Tulane 45-10.
Tulsa is averaging 504.5 yards of total offense, led by quarterback Cody Green, who threw for 274 yards and two scores against the Green Wave. The Hurricane rushing attack is headed by Trey Watts, averaging 108.5 yards on a staggering 9.9 yards per carry. Although Watts does not have a touchdown, Tulsa has five rushing scores on the season.
Following Saturday's contest, the Colonels will host Evangel University on Sept. 22 for its 2012-home debut.
