TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa Golden Hurricane wasted little time against the Nicholls State University football team, scoring four quick touchdowns in the opening quarter, and the Colonels never recovered as Nicholls fell 66-16 on Saturday night in front of 19,139 fans at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
The loss for Nicholls (0-2) was its 12th consecutive, dating back to last year's season-opening win against Evangel University, who the Colonels will host next Saturday for their home opener. Tulsa's 42 first-half points and 66 total points were athe most for an opponent since 2009 when Air Force scored 45 and 72, respectively.
LaQuintin Caston started the game at quarterback, reeling off a career long 63-yard touchdown in the first that made the score 21-6 Tulsa. However, the senior, who moved up to ninth place all-time on the Nicholls rushing list with 1,668 yards, suffered an injury on the play and was unable to return. Caston finished with 86 yards on seven carries.
Tulsa (2-1) racked up 566 yards of total offense, with 399 coming in the first half. All four of the Golden Hurricane touchdown drives in the opening quarter were less than two minutes, scoring three times via the rush, including a 67-yarder by Ja'Terian Douglas, and one touchdown pass. Douglas led Tulsa with 163 yards on five carries, scoring twice.
Jordan Piper and
Kerry Guidry led the defense with six tackles each.
B.J. Lewis,
Chris Bermond and
T.J. Lumar finished with five apiece, and Lumar recorded his second career interception.
For the Colonels,
Landry Klann and
Tuskani Figaro split quarterback duties after Caston left the game. Klann had 134 yards and a touchdown, while Figaro rushed for 46 yards on 11 carries.
Marcus Washington added 91 yards on 15 carries.
In the game, Douglas' 67-yard TD started the scoring for Tulsa, followed by a 1-yard touchdown run by Alex Singleton. Tulsa tacked on another score before Caston's run put Nicholls on the board; however, the point-after was blocked, making it 21-6.
The Hurricane answered with a 58-yard, 59-second touchdown drive at the end of the quarter before extending its lead to 42-6 with two more touchdowns, one which was set up by a Figaro fumble.
Andrew Dolan was able to add a field goal for the Colonels, making good on a 40-yard attempt before the half.
After Tulsa grabbed a commanding 59-9 lead, the Colonels scored on a 51-yard pass from Klann to
Aldaro Russell in the fourth. Tulsa punched in a late touchdown to make the final 66-16.
Nicholls finished the game with 370 yards on offense, including 222 yards on the ground.
Josh Hanberry led the team with three receptions, while Russell was tops in yards with all 51 coming on his fourth-quarter touchdown.
The Colonels will play its 2012 home opener on Sept. 22 against Evangel. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
