Nicholls lost in straight-sets to UCA Thursday night in Conway
Final Stats CONWAY, Ark. – The offensive firepower of the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears was too much for the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team Thursday night, as the Colonels fell 25-18, 28-26, 25-16 at the Prince Center in Conway.
Nicholls (5-7, 2-1 SLC) hit just .103 in the match, and never had a set with more than eight kills finishing with 22 total, while Central Arkansas (13-1, 2-1) finished with 53 as a team and hit .291.
The Colonels were led by
Jessica Addicks who finished the match with seven kills for a .263 clip and three blocks.
Nancy Taylor and
Marlee Bean each had nine assists, while
Jeanne Logarbo had 15 digs on the night.
After taking a 6-3 lead, UCA scored four of the next five points in the first set to tie the game at seven. Regaining the lead on the next point, the Sugar Bears rattled off the next six points to take 13-8 lead and would not look back, going up by as many as five points while holding Nicholls to just ten more for the rest of the set.
A raucous second set seemed to play in the Colonels' favor, as not only would Nicholls force extra points, but battled through 22 ties in the stanza. The largest lead was two points by both sides as the Colonels led that number at three different points later in the set going up 8-6, 12-10 and 13-11 after UCA had their two point lead vanish earlier.
With the score tied 14-14, the Colonels broke the tiebreak three times over the next six points, but the lead would never grow any larger. At 17-17, UCA took the lead back going up one, but not before Nicholls got the next two to lead 19-18. The next four points proved to be the set-changer, as after twice regaining the lead, UCA forced another tie with the Colonels at 20, taking the lead on the very next play to go up 21-20, exchanging points with Nicholls until both teams got to 26 when the Sugar Bears got the final two points to take the set win.
Nicholls had another slim lead in the third set going up 6-5, but a five-point run put UCA up 10-6 and the Colonels would not get any closer than three points for the rest of the set, managing only 16 points in the final set.
The Colonels return to the court on Saturday in Tulsa, taking on Oral Roberts at 2 p.m.
