The Colonels fell in straight-sets to the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Saturday
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team showed a lot of fight in their match on Saturday afternoon, but would not be able to overcome the solid hitting of Sam Houston State on the afternoon falling in straight sets 25-6, 25-19, 25-16.
It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Colonels, as the team falls to 5-10 on the year and 2-4 in the Southland Conference.
The Colonels were led offensively by
Jennifer Brandt's ten kills, as
Nancy Taylor chipped in 12 assists.
Jeanne Logarbo and
Kathryn Stock each had nine digs for the team, while
Jasmine Harris had three blocks at the net.
Sam Houston State (8-9, 4-2) hit .224 as a team and finished with no less than 12 kills in each set, paced by Kendall Cleveland's double-double of ten kills and 11 digs.
After earning only two kills in the first set, the Colonels showed signs of life in the second, battling back to take a 14-11, the team's first of the match. There were a total of three ties and two lead changes, with the final change coming after the Colonels went up by three, as Sam Houston went on an 11-0 run to go up 22-14. Nicholls scored four of the next five points to make the score 23-18, earning one more point before the Bearkats closed out the set with a kill.
Nicholls again jumped out to a short early lead, going up 3-1 before the Bearkats scored five straight to go up 6-3. The lead would not change hands again as the Bearkats went on rallies of four and six points to gain enough ground on the Colonels to win the final set 25-16.
The Colonels will step out of conference action for two matches next week, taking on the UNO Privateers in New Orleans on Tuesday and Grambling on Thursday, before hosting rival Southeastern next Saturday afternoon.
