Jasmine Harris had eight kills for the Colonels in their loss to South Alabama Tuesday night
Final Stats MOBILE, Ala. – With a 19-14 lead in the first set, it seemed as if the Colonels were on their way to the second set up 1-0 over the South Alabama Jaguars. But a furious rally by the Jags that forced extra points en route to a 28-26 set win haunted the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team for the rest of the match as USA rolled to a 3-0 (26-28, 11-25, 15-25) sweep Tuesday night in Mobile.
Nicholls (1-4), playing for the first time since August 25 in the Missouri Tiger Invitational after their home tournament was cancelled, hit just .096 with 31 kills to 20 errors, while USA (3-4) only hit .265 with 40 kills and 14 errors.
Jasmine Harris led the Colonels with eight kills on the night hitting .353, followed by
Jennifer Brandt's seven.
Nancy Taylor had 20 assists, while
Jeanne Logarbo had 11 digs and
Jessica Addicks had three blocks and three digs to go along with her five kills.
South Alabama's Savannah Stewart led all players with 11 kills, and hit a blistering .526 with two aces, seven digs and a block to account for 13.5 points for the Jaguars.
The turning point for Nicholls came up five at 19-14. USA rattled off five straight points to tie the game and instead of calling a timeout, the Colonels made some substitutions taking the next point to take a 20-19 lead. The lead was short lived as the Jaguars scored the next three points to go up 22-20 sitting three points from taking the first set. Another three point rally by the Colonels had them up one in a seesaw battle.
The set saw four more ties and only one more lead change, as after a 26-all tie, USA got two consecutive kills to win the set.
The second set was rocky from the start as South Alabama raced out to a 10-4 lead, mowing their way through the set and leading by as many as 15 before taking the second set 25-11.
Although the Colonels found a little more offense in the third, the Jaguars again jumped out to a lead Nicholls was never able to recover from as Nicholls had ten attack errors in that set alone. South Alabama had only eight kills, but converted 64-percent of their sideout chances in the set and 65-percent overall for the entire match.
The Colonels will be back in action this weekend, participating in the Saluki Invitational hosted by SIU, joined by the host Salukis, UALR and UT Martin.
