Colonels Steamroll Jags, 6-0

Final Stats BATON ROUGE, La. – Wanting to rebound after taking a tough loss to ULL on Monday, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team scored early and often in a 6-0 shutout win over the Southern Jaguars Wednesday night at A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge.

The Colonels (2-4) had never lost to the Jaguars in team history, and continued the trend after firing off 22 shots in the contest to Southern's (0-2) four. Spencer Valdespino, who scored her first goal of the season on Monday, netted two goals and an assist in the win while Kristy Tatom assisted on two scores and picked up one of her own. Annie Newell, Missy McGuire and Lauren O'Brien each tallied a goal, with O'Brien adding an assist.

In the second start of her career, Haley Golden (2-0) had just two saves on the afternoon, both coming in the second half as Southern only had two shots on goal the entire game.

Valdespino scored in the 20th minute to kick start the match, getting the assist from Tatom to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead. Exactly ten minutes later, the result was the same except this time it was Valdespino that assisted on Tatom's goal to put Nicholls up 2-0 for the final score of the first period.

Nicholls exploded in the second as McGuire scored the first goal of her Nicholls career in the 54th minute of the game as the Colonels went up three and cruising.

Valdespino and O'Brien each scored on unassisted goals in the 56th and 68th minutes of the game and added lagniappe just 30 seconds later when O'Brien found Newell for the game's final score, putting the Colonels up six.

Nicholls returns to Thibodaux, welcoming the ULM Warhawks this Sunday afternoon in the team's home opener at 1 p.m.
