Final Stats 2 CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team bounced back on Saturday defeating the UT Martin Skyhawks in the morning match, before falling to the UALR Trojans in three sets to close out the 2012 Saluki Invitational Saturday.
Jennifer Brandt was named to the all-tournament team after a solid weekend where she finished with over 20 kills and digs.
The Colonels open a three-game home stand on Tuesday, hosting the UNO Privateers at 6:30 p.m. in Stopher Gym.
Game One: Nicholls 3, UT Martin 0
The Colonels did not want a repeat of last night against the UT Martin Skyhawks offensively, and rebounded in strong fashion defeating UTM in straight sets 25-18, 26-24, 25-22 in the morning session.
As a team, Nicholls (2-5) hit into only 17 attack errors in the game while putting down 42 kills in the process. In the first two sets alone the team had 16 and 18 kills, holding UTM (1-7) to below .050 in attack percentage.
Jennifer Brandt tallied her first double-double of the season with her game-high 14 kill, 13 dig match and accounted for 17 points.
Jessica Addicks accounted for 12.5 points on the day after tallying eight kills, eight digs and seven blocks.
In her first start of the season, freshman setter
Marlee Bean served up a team season-high 35 assists and dug up ten balls for the first double-double of her young career, as the team had four players, led by
Jeanne Logarbo's 20, with ten or more digs in the match to finish with 90 as a team.
With a 2-1 advantage in the first set, Nicholls went on a 7-0 run to jump out to a 9-1 lead to set the tone early. The closest the Skyhawks got to the Colonels in the set was five points when the match was 13-8 in favor of Nicholls and it didn't stay that way for long as the Colonels scored three of the next four to pull away and force a UTM timeout.
The second set was much tighter as there would be nine ties and four lead changes, leading to extra points to decide a winner. With an 8-all tie, Nicholls fell behind by three before outscoring UTM 4-1 to tie the game at 12. After three more ties leading to a 14-14 score, Nicholls got a kill and two Skyhawk attack errors to go up three, maintaining that lead for most of the set until UTM slowly clawed back to tie the game at 24 before taking the final two points to go up 2-0.
Much like the second, there would be eight ties and two lead changes in the third as the Colonels trailed 17-14 at one point of the set. However, the Colonels showed resiliency and rallied to tie the game at 18-18, leading to a tense next four points as Nicholls took a 21-19 lead after one more tie and held off the Skyhawks for the win.
Game Two: UALR 3, NIcholls 0
After hitting well against the Skyhawks, the Colonels were unable to match the tempo of the Trojans, falling in straight sets to UALR 15-25, 15-25, 13-25 Saturday afternoon.
Nicholls (2-6) hit .097 for the match and had only one set with more than ten kills with 11 in the second.
The Trojans (4-4) had only nine attack errors in the match total, hitting .319 overall and trailed just twice in the entire match.
Jennifer Brandt led the Colonels with eight kills and 12 digs and a block, while
Jessica Addicks added five.
Nancy Taylor added ten assists, while
Jeanne Logarbo and
Marlee Bean each had ten digs.
Edina Begic led all players with 18 kills with a .298 clip, and tied for the team lead with 13 digs for the first of two team double-doubles, while Marleen de Zoete had 30 assists and ten digs for UALR.
After having 90 digs in the first match of the day, the Colonels only had 46 to UALR's 62 as four players had double-digit digs for the match on the Trojans side.
With a 2-2 score in the first set, UALR rattled off seven straight points to go up 9-2 early. However, The Trojans outscored the Colonels 11-3 to go up 20-6, before Nicholls scrapped to get nine points before the Trojans got the final point.
The Nicholls offense woke up a bit in the second staying within a few points of UALR after the first six points, but the Colonels needed a timeout after a five point swing put the Trojans up 9-4. After getting to 13-10 and 14-11, the Colonels couldn't stop another Trojan rally that pushed the lead to 18-11 leading to another timeout. Nicholls pieced just four more points together for the rest of the set.
The third was just as brutal as UALR went on multiple runs of four or five points in the set to go jump out to a lead of 15-6 and 20-9, holding the Colonels to just 13 points in the final set.
