Colonels Slated for Northwestern State Matchup on ESPN3

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will try to win its fourth straight game on the road as the Colonels take on Northwestern State at Prather Coliseum on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com, as part of the Southland Conference television package. It will be the first of two games this season to be televised with the Colonels' home matchup against Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 14 to air on ESPN3 as well. Thursday's game can also be listened to live on KNSU 91.5 FM.

Nicholls (11-4, 3-1) comes into the matchup winners of its last three, including the first two games of four consecutive on the road in Southland play. After a convincing 17-point win at McNeese on Monday, the Colonels held off Southeastern on Saturday, winning 71-65. At SLU, Alisha Allen tallied her second double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead four Colonels in double figures.

Since the start of the Southland schedule, the Colonels are shooting nearly 50 percent from the field, leading the league in conference play (.489) as well as overall (.440). Against Southeastern, Nicholls was one make (29-of-60) from reaching 50 percent or better for the third consecutive game. The Colonels have won all three games this season when shooting at least 50 percent from the field and are 9-0 when outshooting opponents.

Since being inserted into the starting lineup three games ago, junior Jasmine Scott has been a huge factor in the Colonels' increased percentage. Along with averaging 12.3 points as a starter, Scott ranks second in the Southland in field goal percentage at .588.

Nicholls features only two scorers in double figures, Allen (14.7) and KK Babin (12.5), but has four others averaging 7.7 points or better. After her 15-point outing at SLU, LiAnn McCarthy improved her scoring average to 9.2 on the year. She is followed by reserve Emani White (8.5) and starters Scott (7.9) and Jenny Nash (7.7). As a team, the Colonels are averaging 66.3 points per contest, which is third in the Southland.

Northwestern State (5-10, 1-4) will be looking to avoid its fifth straight conference loss after opening up Southland play with a 64-62 win over McNeese. In their second game against Lamar, the Lady Demons fell by only three points but have lost their last three games by double figures.

The Lady Demons, under first-year co-head coaches Brook and Scott Stoehr, have struggled to put up points, ranking 321st in the NCAA in scoring (52.4 ppg). Despite its offensive woes, Northwestern State has been tough to beat at home, going 3-2 including its win against McNeese.

The home-court advantage is evident in the all-time series, which Northwestern State leads 59-7, as Nicholls has won only twice on the Lady Demons' court. However, one of the victories came last season as the Colonels swept the series for the first time.

NSU is led by post-player Jasmine Upchurch, who is averaging 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds. Freshman Janelle Perez is also scoring in double figures at 10.1 ppg and is 10th in the Southland in assists at 3.3 per game.

Following Thursday's televised game, Nicholls will wrap up its road trip on Saturday at Stephen F. Austin.
