Alisha Allen scored 13 points in the Colonels' loss at Northwestern State
Final Stats NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team built a 15-point lead in the first half at Northwestern State, but the Colonel offense stalled in the final seven minutes as the Lady Demons handed Nicholls a 64-55 defeat at Prather Coliseum Thursday.
With the loss, Nicholls (11-5, 3-2) saw its three-game overall and three-game road winning streaks snapped. Northwestern State improves to 6-10 and 2-4 in conference.
Alisha Allen led three Colonels in double figures, scoring 13 points.
KK Babin finished with 11 points and a game-high eight assists, and
Jenny Nash added 10 points.
Despite the Colonels finishing the night shooting 37.3 percent - their lowest mark in conference play - Nicholls overcame a sluggish start, trailing 9-7, with an impressive 17-0 run to take command in the first half. Nash started the spurt with a 3-pointer and
Emani White, who scored eight off the bench, added two from long range.
Jasmine Scott, who had six steals, capped the run at the eight-minute mark with a layup.
Down 30-19, Northwestern State grabbed the momentum before the break, scoring the half's final eight points.
Four minutes into the second half, Keisha Lee, who led the Lady Demons with a game-high 22 points, cut the deficit to two, but Nash answered with her second 3-pointer of the game. The Colonels regained a double-digit lead, 45-35, before Northwestern State made its final push.
The Lady Demons gradually chipped away, but Allen kept the Colonels up by scoring seven consecutive points, with her final bucket making the count 52-45 at the 6:50 mark. However, Northwestern State took the lead on a basket-and-one from Lee with four minutes left which led to a 15-0 run. Babin sank a late 3-pointer before the Lady Demons closed out the game at the line, winning 64-55.
Northwestern State shot 48 percent from the field and controlled the glass, outrebounding Nicholls 42-25. The Colonels, which came into the game leading the Southland in free throw percentage, made only 4-of-9 at the line.
The Colonels will wrap up their four-game road trip on Saturday at Stephen F. Austin. Tipoff against the Ladyjacks is set for 4 p.m.
